Series 6 Viewing Figures

The biggest thing the BBC care about is the share and the opening episode got around 1.3 million less viewers than the opening episode of Matt Smith's era but scored a 1.6% increase in the share.

Didn't help for Outcasts, I know the ratings weren't as high as Doctor Who but the Live+7 ratings doubled the viewing figures and iPlayer got about half a million more views, and they still canned it.

Am not sure about Outcasts cause I didn't keep up with the ratings but I was under the impression the show even with the finals was under 6 million and the I player stuff only really kicked it when it was moved to sunday?

I'm not sure what the finals were, but I know the show they replaced it with was only something like 300k higher in the ratings.

I've never seen them factor in recorded (sky plus'd?) into the ratings before, very strange.

I would watch it on iplayer and contribute to the ratings, except that my iplayer has annoying horizontal artifacts when playing in HD, so I download it instead.

I don't know why it does this, I thought it used Flashplayer which makes it unlikely that it is conflicting with other codecs on my PC.

You can download the HD version from iPlayer can't you?

Yep, just looked, you can download the HD version from the website, 918mb.

Yeah, but it still plays using whatever platform they are using online, and still has artifacts.

The BBC America broadcast drew 1.26 million viewers, far and away BBC America's biggest telecast ever. Obviously, it's a far less impressive number than the official BBC number, but it's fantastic for BBC America and has to justify the costs of co-production. If the BBC's support starts slipping and these numbers keep up, BBC America might be persuaded to put more money into Who.

this is the third season with matt smith right?
I watch dr.who on bbc america here in the states. I am with the doctor till the end of time.

Those are excellent numbers for BBC America, which still isn't available in a lot of places in the US.

Sure you are mate.

I guess if you did actually watch it, you'd know it's the beginning of Smith's second year.

The Daily Mail don't care about bashing Doctor Who in particular really - it's all part of their usual attacks on the BBC.

BBC Statement on the figures

Speaking to Digital Spy, Dan McGolpin, Head of Planning and Scheduling for BBC One said: "Doctor Who is a key part of BBC One's Saturday night schedule and this series got off to a great start with the opening episode achieving a 37% share of live viewing - more than any episode in the previous series.

"However, overnight ratings are only one part of the story for shows like Doctor Who and once you take into account catch-up viewing, the total audience for episode one is now around 9 million, representing a 43% share of the audience. BBC iPlayer figures will take this even higher - last year's opening episode was the most watched show on this platform, being streamed over 2.2m times."

While fans have remained critical of the 6pm start time given to the first two episodes of series six, schedules show that episode three 'The Curse of the Black Spot' will be broadcast at 6.15pm, while episode four, 'The Doctor's Wife' - written by Neil Gaiman - will be shown at 6.40pm.

"Like last year, this series of Doctor Who is scheduled at start times between 6pm and 7pm on a Saturday night, where it attracts a very strong audience including a large proportion of younger viewers," McGolpin added. "Very few drama series on any of the UK's channels achieve audience volumes of this size."

So there we go.

The Doctor Who News Page is now reporting that BBC One has blinked, and will be moving Doctor Who to a slightly later timeslot and swapping it with So You Think You Can Dance, starting with the May 14 broadcast of The Doctor's Wife. (The BBC by the way is saying 6:30, not 6:40 as mentioned above).

Another reason for the move is to put as much space between it and the BBC's apparent stinkbomb Don't Scare the Hare, which had been DW's lead-in the first couple of weeks.

I was curious what type of show that was, so I went onto YouTube and saw a glip.*

Oh. My. God.

There's a legend in American TV about a game show Jackie Gleason once hosted called You're in the Picture, which was so awful Gleason unilaterally cancelled it after one broadcast and spent what was to be its second episode giving a 30-minute apology to the viewers. (This really happened - you can find clips online.)

Well, someone at the BBC should consider doing the same. Even in this brief clip, I can see why this thing was so toxic it was even bringing down Doctor Who:

* I spotted this typo but I like it so I'm keepin' it!

More great news...

Barb have now issued final ratings for the week ending 24 April making Doctor Who: The Impossible Astronaut the 6th most watched programme of the week.

The Impossible Astronaut becomes the 44th episode of Doctor Who to achieve a top ten place. It is a higher chart placing than any other season premier in the show's history, apart from the Eleventh Doctor's first episode, The Eleventh Hour, which was 3rd.

Out of 771 Doctor Who episodes broadcast, only 13 have achieved a higher chart placing

;)
