Series 4 Box Set

Worf2DS9

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
The Doctor Who Complete 4th Series was released today in North America. I know it's outrageously price here ($99.99 where I got it -- I know, I know, but I couldn't resist once I had it in my hands!), but did anyone else take the plunge?

I also tried looking for "The Infinite Quest," but they didn't have it.

I have it on order from Amazon- they attempted delivery today, but I was out running errands.

The price is outrageous, but I'm really looking forward to some of the audio commentaries, as well as Howard Attfield's deleted scenes from "Partners in Crime."

does The Infinite Quest even have a R1 DVD? I dont think it was ever aired over there, or anywhere else in the world come to think of it.

I simply wait until my local library gets a copy that I requested they purchase and then ahem...copy it. The Infinite Quest I belive is apart of the extras but was never aired in Canada as far as I am aware along with Voyage of the Damned.

"The Infinite Quest" is a separate single disc release, not a part of the extras on any season set; it retails for $10 US and $12.48 Canadian.

Not yet. I'm hoping I have the self control to wait a bit! If I do put off purchasing it, I imagine one of my parents would pick it up as my Christmas present. We'll see...

Question: What is the packaging like this time around? I know for series 1 and 2 they put the DVDs in the cardboard fold out design, (which I don't feel strongly about one way or the other) but I hated the flimsy plastic sleeve that went over the set. They cracked almost immediately!

Thankfully for series 3 they went for a cardboard slipcase in place of the thin plastic, but even the cardboard sleeve is kind-of tricky to slide in and out.

So have they done anything noticeably different for this set?

I just ordered my copy via Deep Discount DVD for $48.67 using the promotional codes for their fall sale (see http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-bargains/542898-unofficial-dd-25-off-faq-fall-2008-edition.html for coupon codes). I figured it would be hard to beat that deal.

Same here. I've been watching the price on DD carefully for this sale. The prices on all their other titles went up, and I was hoping it would stay at 65 til today. You can use the coupon for dvds only if they've been released. Well, it was released today so the coupon worked. I ended up getting that and Infinite Quest. IQ only cost $4.61 ... Not bad for a $10 dvd.

The downside is they are backordered up right now, but I can wait a few days, to get them at less than half price.

The price is the same here, so it's not like you're getting shafted any harder than the rest of us.
I've had it pre-ordered for months, it was delivered yesterday, but I haven't watch anything off it yet.
Series 4 (at least in R2) has a cardboard slip cover over 2 fold outs holding 3 discs each.

Thanks for the info. :)

I learned today that Best Buy carries Series 4 in an exclusive steelbook case. I haven't seen it myself. But it sounds like the nicest option to go for.

On the plus side, steelbook cases are sturdier and look nicer ~ On the downside, the disks are usually "secured" in their holders so tightly that it makes them troublesome to take out. But perhaps the steelbook cover consists of only the slip cover, with a cardboard interior inside. That would be ideal IMO.

With regard to The Infinite Quest, it seems that almost nobody is stocking it, for some reason. Both Borders and Circuit City's websites list it as "Not Available In Stores," meaning they do stock it, but only for internet orders; and in the New York/New Jersey area, I've only found one Best Buy store that stocks it. Barnes & Noble apparently do carry it in some of their stores, though.

^Yeah, there was some kind of computer problem with the pricing. I think some of the earliest purchasers might have gotten the lower rate, but it'll probably be fixed now.

I got my copy of the standard Region 1 set today. I don't have copies of the previous series to compare (yet), but from the description above it sounds like it's the same approach as series three, complete with difficulty sliding the bulky interior package out of a tight slipcase.

So far I've watched the deleted scenes for "Voyage of the Damned" (nothing too interesting), Howard Attfield's scenes from "Partners in Crime" (goodness, the poor man was visibly ill), and the first David Tennant video diary (a joy to watch- Julie Gardner's enthusiasm is infectious). I've also listened to the "Partners in Crime" audio commentary, which as always with RTD commentaries is a mix of production tidbits and irrelevant comedy. I love it.

Damn, and I'd thought the BBC had gone temporarily sane. Well, I'll wait 'em out.

I picked mine up last night at Best Buy for around 40 dollars. I had to watch both of the library stories and was surprised that I had forgotten how great they were.

I like the jazzy circly effect on the cover that goes all wibbly-wobbly when you move it. I also scanned through the booklet to see who's on the commentaries and was a bit disappointed Georgia isn't there for "The Doctor's Daughter". Does anyone know if she's on the alternate commentary from the BBC site, if they have those?

I haven't watched anything on the set yet. I want to finish Duckman first.

Actually, Georgia Moffett is on the box set commentary for "The Doctor's Daughter." The booklet listing is incorrect; instead of Russell T Davies, David Tennant, and Ben Foster, it's Catherine Tate, Georgia Moffett, and Ben Foster.
