Series 11 News & Spoilers

I'm worried about this idea of making the character less ecentric and alien and weird. Basically it feels like they might plan on taking the fun out of the universe like TLJ or James Bond and Trek to a lesser degree and try and play all this stuff straight and serious like it's a real drama. For some reason just being fun and escapism isn't enough. Everything has to be gritty or a deconstruction of something that i'm not sure people want to see deconstructed.
I think the idea of a "more relatable" Doctor has been blown a bit out of proportion, IMO. The Doctor has always been eccentric and weird to varying degrees since the First Doctor. It's part of the basic character--regardless of the incarnation--in the same way Captain Kirk is fundamentally heroic or Sherlock Holmes is always very smart. I have no doubts the Thirteenth Doctor will be fun and even funny at times, but I don't think they're going to depict her as a total loon.

But being a loon is where the fun is. A character as smart as the Doctor and wise can always run the risk of sounding preachy and or condescending if you don't add that extra layer of weird to balance it. She could end up sounding like a TNG human without the weird and I think only Patrick Stewart can really pull off that level of arogance, smart and well versed in everything who also makes speeches. I think it not only makes the Doctor more alien but also more relatable which are two things you would think don't work well together but on this show it does. With the help of human companions of course.

Daffy Duck is a loon. The Doctor is not.

What the Doctor occasionally is, however, is a bit quirky, a bit out there, and not always on the same page as others, but the Doctor is never someone that you could put in the same hopeless league as Daffy Duck.

Judging from the brief leaked clip earlier this year (the scene where she asks "why are you calling me ma'am?") she's still going to be quirky. Admittedly that's probably post-regen loopiness but even her "would you be my new best friends?" speech from the trailer is not the sort of thing you expect a hyperintelligent 2200-year old to come out with.

okay this reference is lost on me.

A comic relief sketch, featuring a Master with metallic breasts and a fourteenth Doctor, who was female...written by Steven Moffat...
He was also a rubbish Bond villain, but that one seems more ahead of its time now tbh.

It is/was available on YouTube. Search curse of the fatal death.

I see that the inaugural Comic Con Africa is hosting an official Doctor Who event for series 11 from the 13th to the 15th of September:

They're promoting it by saying they're launching the series at the con, although the article only says they're screening Twice Upon a Time. But it would seem very weird to me to not show something new at a three day event. Are there similar official events happening at other cons around the world? Perhaps a new trailer is going to be dropped ahead of the airdate.

This would be the trade deal then..

They're setting themselves up for massive ratings failure here, just launching the series out of nowhere unannounced and virtually unpromoted. Are they really that afraid of what ITV might come up with to counter? Guarantee you in the States, whatever else is on that night, the fans will clear space for the premiere - if they know it's coming.

Nah. In uk, people will notice, even in multi channel world. There’s also common usage of PVRs that have a series link set up, and iPlayer is ubiquitous and basically free to the large chunk of people with internet access somewhere along the line. It won’t be invisible. The British TV viewing mindset when it comes to homegrown stuff hasn’t changed much even though we now have hundreds of channels. Hence The Bodyguard and Wanderlust filling pages in the newspapers. Though much of that seems to be stealth advertising...’see Keeley Hawks bum!’ ‘See Richard Maddens bum!’ ‘Watch some people have sex...on the BBC! Sometimes by themselves!’
Everything else is Celebrity Big Brother, now Love Island has off buggered.
