Series 10 News Thread (Spoilers, naturally)

So with Series 10 finally starting shooting next Monday (20th of June) I thought it was time for a thread for all official news, set reports etc.

So to kick off with the big (?) news:
Matt Lucas is back as Nardole and not just as a guest star. Quoth the Moffat “Delighted and slightly amazed to be welcoming Matt Lucas back on to the TARDIS – and this time it’s not just for Christmas, he’s sticking around. One of the greatest comedy talents on planet Earth is being unleashed on all of time and space.”

Confirmed writers:
Moffat (4 episodes)
Mark Gatiss (Sigh)
Frank Cottrell-Boyce (Double Sigh)
Sarah Dollard
Mike Bartlett (Creator/writer of the very successful 'Doctor Foster')

Is this the first episode of the regular series 10 they are filming on Monday or this year's Christmas special?

Frank Cottrell-Boyce wrote the godawful "In the Forest of the Night." Not looking forward to his reprisal.

Not terribly excited about Matt Lucas returning either. Not that I didn't enjoy his appearance, but I don't see the need. But I was wrong about Catherine Tate so I'm cautiously optimistic.

Moffat liked In the Forest of the Night for some reason. I think the premise was really interesting but the execution and story itself were awful.

So is Lucas a regular or recurring role?

I am happy that Sarah Dollard is writing another episode, as I liked Face the Raven a lot.

I was under the impression the Christmas special has already filmed. In April.

Moffat called it something like "a beautiful tone poem." Which, maybe it is, but it's also bewilderingly stupid, and the stupidity of it sabotages its poetry.

I liked the concept of "Sleep No More," but like "In the Forest of the Night," the execution was terrible.

"Face the Raven" was largely good with a few minor issues and I especially loved the concept, so I look forward to Sarah Dollard's return at least.

Can't find anything online to confirm this. Class started filming in April and Radio Times suggested in February Doctor Who would not start filming till May but that seems to have now become June:

And it was in May we had the rumours John Barrowman was coming back to film the Christmas special.

I may have April and May confused; the months all blur together. I may have had the Christmas special confused, too, with the Class TARDIS filming.

I liked Sleep No More better than In the Forest of the Night.
Oh, shit, yes! Sleep No More isn't really that bad an episode. The soldiers were kind of interesting and saved what would be a rather forgettable episode otherwise. But Forest of the Night, uggh. That was terrible, easily the worst of modern Who if not Who in general. Seriously, The Twin Dilemma has more to redeem it.

As for Nardole returning, I'm mostly ambivalent. He was alright in The Husbands of River Song, but I didn't see any potential for a return let alone becoming a regular. I'm not against the idea, though.

I wouldn't call Forest of the Night even remotely the worst of NuWho, although it was terrible. I can think of several worse episodes off the top of my head. Still, I don't really want to see any more episodes by its writer.

As for Nardole, I have no opinion. He was a tolerable part of a very average special.

It really is the worst, and I really can't think of any that are worse. First of all, there's no science to it at all. Now yes, Doctor Who has never been the best at accurate science, and I've been a proponent that it shouldn't be. That being said, there's always an internal logic and everything has to have a rational explanation that makes sense in the show's internal world. EG, an alien holo-projector might not be much of a rational explanation for ghosts in the real world, but in Doctor Who it is. But Forest of the Night is an episode where magical fairies are responsible for everything. And that's not even a joke or an exaggeration, that literally is the plot of the damn episode, magical fairies are responsible for saving Earth and they grant a little girl's every wish, including reuniting her with her lost sister at the end. To make matters worse, the Doctor is completely pointless in this episode, since in the end all he has to do is sit back and allow magical fairies to do their thing.

Characterization is also terrible in this episode, particularly with Clara's attitude of "it's better to let children die, they won't be able to mourn their parents." What the fuck? Even ignoring the fact that's terrible advice to give anyone, adult or child, it also doesn't make sense coming from the one who cried for the 2.47 billion children of Gallifrey and convinced three Doctors to go against their plan to destroy Gallifrey, despite the fact two of those Doctors believed this to be a fixed event that had to happen. I mean, some of those children were likely orphans, they have to live with the grief of losing their parents.

I'm sorry, but actually no I'm not sorry, Forest of the Night is terrible and deserves the distinction of being Doctor Who's worst. Period.

I agree, Forest of the Night is the worse episode of NuWho I ever seen. The Doctor has no real impact to the narrative, and Clara is out of character especially in a scene where she should be herself. Clara is still a heroine as far as I'm concerned and she should be hopeful.

It's not "worst, Period". Its the worst in your opinion, which is fine. I'd say that Love & Monsters and Fear Her are a lot worse. I also hated The Zygon Invasion/Inversion and Dark Water a lot more. As a bad episode, I consider In The Forest of the Night to be a middle of the road "bad" episode. Heck, there are episodes people love (like Human Nature/Family of Blood) that I consider worse then Forest. Its not even remotely good, but its not even the worst of the Capaldi era in my opinion, much less the worst of NuWho or Doctor Who in general. In my opinion, at least.
