Sequels That Are Great

What movie sequels do you think buck the trend of diminished returns? Here is my shortlist off the top of my head:

Second Sequels as Good as or Better than the Original:

Terminator 2

Aliens

Tomorrow Never Dies

From Russia With Love

License to Kill

Spiderman 2

X-Men 2

The Empire Strikes Back

Sequels Inferior to the Original(s) but Still Good on their Own:

The Temple of Doom

The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Alien 3

The Two Towers

Die Hard: With a Vengeance

PotC: Dead Man's Chest

The Return of the Jedi

Third Sequels that Buck the Trend of Being Inferior to the Original(s):

The Return of the King

(Arguably) The Revenge of the Sith

The Last Crusade

Prisoner of Azkaban is probably the best Harry Potter movie, and it was the third one

I think most would agree Silence of the Lambs was better than Manhunter (though perhaps it's not a proper sequel)

The second Austin Powers movie (IMO) :p

You've hit most of the big ones already- Aliens, Empire, Terminator 2

sequels i think are good and valid entries in the series:

T-3, X-2, X-3, Spider-Man 2, Batman Returns, AOTC, ROTS, BTTF2 and 3, Predator 2, POTC2, Transporter 2, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Lethal Weapon 2 and 3, MI2 and 3, Rise of the Silver Surfer, Austin Powers 2 and 3, Die Hard 2,3 and 4.

sequels equal to or better than the first:

T-2, Aliens, Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum, Clerks II

Best sequels are:

The Empire Strikes Back
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Terminator 2
Superman II (either cut, both were good)
Star Trek III, and IV
Revenge of the Sith
I want to put a Batman film on here, but the only good ones were 1989 and Begins, niether of with qualifies as a sequel, but what the hell, they're on the list.

Road Warrior was a bigger hit internationally than the original Mad Max.

aliens, harry potters prisoner of something or other, star trek 2, were all a lot better then the first ones. Though i must admit i'm begining to like alien a bit more now.

Shock Treatment. I know, I know. The only other person here who has heard of it is TerriO.

Star Trek II
Aliens
Lilo & Stitch: Stitch Has a Glitch

Sequels That Are Great...

X Men 2
Aliens
Empire Strikes Back
Attack of The Clones
Revenge of The Sith
Star Trek : WOK
Star Trek : TVH
Star Trek : TUC
Star Trek : FC
Terminator 2
Bourne & LOTR (Got Better With Each Sequel)
Austin Powers 2
Batman Begins
Superman 2
Superman Returns
Die Hard 3
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Goldeneye
Casino Royale

I would agree with most of those, but can you think of any good sequels that aren't part of a trilogy or movie franchise? I can't think of any, probably because if the sequel was good then they would have made more.

Except, I remember Analyze That (sequel to Analyze This) as being decent, but not better than the first.

Third Sequels that Buck the Trend of Being Inferior to the Original(s):

The Return of the King

(Arguably) The Revenge of the Sith

The Last Crusade

Actually, they are second sequels or else third movies in a series. A third sequel is the fourth movie in a series, just as a first sequel is the second. :p

Pedantry aside, I can't add anything to what has already been posted. NX_01 Mark's list is particularly good.

The Bourne Ultimatum
Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
Saw III
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Mission: Impossible III
Clerks II
X2: X-Men United

I see Back to the Future Part II, The Bourne Supremacy, Austin Powers II: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock under "Sequels Inferior to the Original(s) but Still Good on their Own".

In my mind The Bourne Ultimatum and perhaps Goldmember can be filed under "Third Sequels that Buck the Trend of Being Inferior to the Original(s)".

Got to go for Aliens in the 'as good or better' category, as it's my favourite film. I'd put both Bourne sequels in there as well - perhaps the only time all the sequels have exceeded the original. (I'd also note that since Dr No was the original Bond movie, it's had numerous sequels which were better in every way. But Bond isn't exactly your normal film franchise.)

Have to go with

Aliens
T-2
Superman 2
Godfather 2
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Predator 2
St: TWoK
SW: Empire
Toy Story 2

The Mummy Returns. I saw that one first, and actually haven't been able to sit through the first film yet because Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz have such terrific husband-and-wife chemistry in Returns.

In the original film they meet for the first time, and in true movie form they can't stand each other, but have to grin and bear it for a while.
