Looks like we've got us a shootin' match! Three great stories presented for your consideration, but like they say, "there can be only one." Winner, that is. Y'all commence to voting! Poll will run from now to midnight (US Eastern standard time) on October 1st. One vote per customer :D

Gul Re'jal's entry, "Where Stars Sank"

Rush Limborg's entry, "The Evening Star"

Trelane's entry, "Stairway to Heaven"
http://trekbbs.com/showthread.php?p=5253248#post5253248

Three great stories! Thanks to all who entered this month's challenge.

While I was very impressed with Rush Limborg, I've got to go with Gul Re'jal. The concept of a modern legend was very well thought through and the story had an incredible, you-are-there emotional pull to it.

I would also like to thank Cobalt Frost for getting me to get off my tail and write "The Spark in Yartek's Eye." Though I decided to keep it short and not put the "Stars Fall" element into my universe, which rendered it ineligible, the inspiration was still there.

Given that one person has self-voted, it seems that all entrants should self-vote to cancel it out. My two cents.

You're most welcome! And your story was top-notch as usual.

Silly question, but as the challenge originator/arbiter, am I allowed to vote?

I'd personally prefer that that vote be not counted as valid. After all--number one, I personally could never in good conscience vote for myself.

Number two...that story isn't even finished. (BTW...if it isn't finished, that means it hasn't made the deadline. So...?)

Cobalt Frost, to address your question--when I hosted the June Challenge, I voted. I suppose it's a matter of preference. I personally have no problem with your voting.

As far as the self-voting, I must admit to being guilty of that when I first started entering the monthly challenge, and I didn't specifically say no self-voting. Mea culpa.

Admiral2 allowed a late unfinished entry last month, so I figured I'd be equally generous. If Trelane doesn't post the rest of the story by voting's end, we'll see about having him reallocate his vote, unless he's willing and/or able to do so now.

Oy carrumba, it's a lot of work for something fun!

I agree about the unfinished entry. For someone to get extra time compared to Rush and Gul Re'jal is unfair.

It was a judgment call. If I hadn't I would have ended up with just one valid entry: yours. I could have just declared you the winner immediately...but I've been frequenting this forum too long, and I figured I better create some kind of vote that would get the same result anyway just so the reading public could say they chose.

In the end, you have two valid entries and one unfinished one. It's nice that you were generous, but it was unnecessary. Two entries is a perfectly valid contest.

You're not required to say it. You're not required to enforce it. You were the contest runner. Your rules, your poll. Don't let anybody tell you different.

Meanwhile, I'm boostin' El Rushbo this poll.

Congratulations to Gul Re'jal!

Can't wait to see what you come up with for us!

I keep clicking back and forth, sure that I clicked something wrong, because it couldn't be true! But each time I see the same thing.

Thanks for the votes. I really didn't expect to get so many (yes, I consider 3 many :)). And thanks to the other participants for participating :) It was an honour to compete against you.

Congratulations, Gul Re'jal! And thanks to Rush Limborg as well! We had two great entries this month, definitely amongst the best the monthly challenge has seen IMO.

It seems like extraordinarily poor form to vote for oneself in such a contest. I'm at a loss why someone would enter a story into a fanfic contest and then vote for it themselves.

Bit pathetic in my opinion.

Congratulations to Gul Rejal though. A well deserved win.

I think poorly of self-voting myself, but it seems from observation that it depends on the contest-runner on this board to decide whether or not that's against the rules.
