September Art Challenge -- Albertese

Nothing to show for it yet, but I'm gonna take a stab at the whole "Challenge Coin" idea.

This early post is just to place claim to my idea:

A coin issued to crew members of the Enterprise on Kirk's five year mission. Which five years? I'll go with the seemingly official dates of 2265 to 2270. Though I realize that's debatable.

I'll post images as I make them.

Ok, so here's my idea for the obverse of the coin. I'm still kicking about some ideas for the reverse.

I hope to have time to actually make this coin. Out of sculpted epoxy putty. I'll even paint it bronze.

That looks good but your using what looks like the USS Defaints NCC-1764 Symbol there over the 2265 :)

Yeah. Oops. I meant for it to be the boomerang on the ship's pennants and behind the Admiral's desks. But I guess that's got a more rounded bottom end, now that I think about it. Maybe I'll do something with it to include the horizonatal bar like on the pennant, but I didn't want to conflict too much with the rays in the BG. I'll try it out tomorrow after work and see how it looks.

Still trying to figure something for the reverse. Any ideas?

All right. Round two. This version changes the Defiant logo into the Starfleet boomerang like I meant in the first place. Also I moved the Enterprise delta onto the reverse, replacing it with a version of the UFP pennant on the obverse.

The names around the back are inspired by 20th century space mission logos which incorporate the names of the crew. Naturally you couldn't fit 430 names on one pocket sized coin (and have them be legible) so I went ahead and just listed department heads. I thought it would be kinda neat.

However, I'm still not totally sold on this idea. What do you guys think?

Nice cept you forgot Chekov...

I figured he was head weopons officer...

I guess I am a purist, but if the intent is to instill pride, why not stick with your original idea of keeping the naems of the past captains of the ship? Personal choice really and either works, but I like the past captains version better.

YMMV

Very nice! I like that UFP pennant there - good place for it. If you manage to sculpt this, are you going to leave it bronze all over, or add in some color?

@USS Jack Riley: I believe you're thinking of Shaw's entry.

kaisernathan1701: I breifly thought about including Checkov, but h wasn't a bridge officer for a whole season. Not to mention he was an Ensign, and (I doubt) head of any department. If I were doing it of the TMP Enterprise then I would include him. Those names would be "DECKER SONAK SCOTT UHURA SULU CHEKOV CHAPEL" Since he was head of security in the movie. I include Decker, Sonak, and Chapel, since I assume such coins would have been minted before the V'Ger crisis. I don't know if Dr. Chapel was supposed to be the CMO or not, but McCoy certainly wasn't going to be if he could help it! I'll leave TMP to someone else though. TOS is my first love.

USS Jack Riley: I too loved Shaw's idea of putting the names of all the captains on the reverse, but (1) I'd hate to steal all his good ideas; and (2) I think we're designing coins for different purposes. He seems to be making something that commemorates the ship itself. While I'm making a coin that would be given to crew members that served on Enterprise any time during the five year mission. The show made it seem like there were only a handful of starships and that serving aboard them was dangerous and carried a level of prestige. Certainly worthy of a challenge coin!

B.J.: I've been toying with that very idea. One part of my brain wants to do it simply bronze. the other thinks some color might be cool. Before I do this, I'll tr some photoshop mock ups. If I do color, I'm thinking maybe for the obverse: black in the surround that has the ship's name and the phrase Starship Duty, metallic gold (or possibly just pale yellow) for the boomerang and red for the pennant with a white star. For the obverse, the surround with the character names would be black and the delta would be metallic gold with black star and trim (like usual).

Like I said, I'll have to play around with it.

Crap. Getting old is really messing with my memory. [Adm. Kirk]"Must be getting senile."[/Adm. Kirk] I appear to have developed CRS Syndrome (Can't Remember S---).

Sorry for the errant post.

ahhhh ok then :)

Since we have so many cool entries I thought I'd bump them to the front, also to remind everyone to send them in by tomorrow night to Ptrope!

Actually, a bunch f stuff cropped up here and I wasn't able to revisit this project at all. So i think I'm gonna bow out this month. There's plenty of fully rendered stuff this month that an unfinished sketch is not IMHO worthy of entry.

Good luck to the rest of the guys though!
