Why are people failing to understand the concept of an alternate universe?

Well that kinda defeats the purpose of the original question.
Under the rule of the alternate universe your answer is less likely to be "oh i'll send myself lottery numbers" or some other means by which to make yourself rich.
With the alternate universe rule, people are more likely to give answers other than those designed to make yourself a millionaire.

Simply find a viable way to travel between universes. As you kill your otherselves you'll become more and more rich via the multi-universal nature of trying to "evenly" spread out the wealth of an essence.

I'd send the plans for the time machine itself and a set of winning lottery numbers, in the hope that alternate me would build his own time machine and send the numbers back to me at an earlier point in time. After all, he's my alternate, so I'm his and the machine should work the same way.
(Of course, there could be an infinite number of alternate mes around, but hopefully, the lottery numbers would get back to the past me in this universe eventually.)

Ah, the 60s.
I'd send an earlier me a copy of the time machine plans and all the lotto numbers necessary to fund building a time machine that doesn't create alternate universes 
Even if it doesnt' succeed, at least one extra version of me ends up rich. Either that or it sets the path for every version of me by sending a copy of the time machine and the resources to every copy of me to become...

Even though it's an alternate universe the object would go to I suppose i'd still send back lottery numbers.
That way i'll know that there's at least one universe where i'm rich beyond my wildest dreams. I'd also send back a video recording (with the lotto numbers) of me telling my younger alternate self about my time machine, why I sent back the numbers and what I would hope he would do with the money. I'd also supply a list of future events that would likely still take place so he'd know what was coming.
I'd want my alternate self to use the money to build a business empire for him and all future generations of his family.
Another thing I might do is build a bomb and send it through so it lands on Adolf Hitlers lap.
This would not effect the universe where I sent the lotto numbers because sending through the bomb would ceate yet another universe.
