I may have disagreed with 90% of his positions, but I think he actually had the country's best interest in mind. He was that now-nearly-extinct creature- an honorable Republican.

@nightwind1 : my thoughts exactly. I won't have voted for him but I certainly respected him; he was the last or at least one of the very few honorable and honest Republicans left in Washington. He did what he thought was right, not for what was good for him personally or his fellow cronies.

He was a constant thorn in Trump's side - hence the atrocious comments about McCain in the past. I suspect the White House's statement of condolence was not dictated by Trump.
