After reading all the TNG-R novels this week, I still have trouble thinking of Death in Winter as the start of the TNG-R. After reading Resistence, it should (IMO) be considered the start of the Relaunch (quality-wise, I think it could have been better, but that's another topic..)
Not only is DiW more of an epilogue to the pre-NEM era (as ryan123450 said), but it's too mired in MJF's "canon" (starting from Reunion, through Valiant and the Stargazer series), for my taste.
