Selling a PC

The PC I want to sell basically has the following:


Windows XP

Geforce 7800 GTX Graphics Card

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ 2.01 ghz

1GB of RAM.

DVD/RW

20 Inch acer flatscreen monitor.

So how much do you guys think I should put it up for? any ideas? because I don't have a clue.
 
I'm not too hot on PC prices these days, but I'd say something around the £150 mark maybe? Maybe £200 if you get lucky... I'd personally pay that for a second-hand XP machine over a brand new Vista machine for £100 more, no arguments.

The graphics card is fairly decent (at least up to the less intensive Xbox 360 games specs), and I'm assuming the motherboard is PCI-E, so that means it's got a bit more life in it yet.

Do you know how big the hard drive is and if it's IDE or SATA? I don't imagine it'll make a major difference on the price, but you might be able to squeeze a few more quid out of it.

And is the monitor standard ratio or widescreen? If it's widescreen, I'd add £10-20 onto it. Always leave yourself a bit of leeway for being haggled down too - maybe put the selling price for about £20 more than you actually expect or intend to sell it for maybe?

^I think the point being that you can buy a new one with the same specs for next to nothing, so you can't expect to get much for it. It's just a law of electronic devices.

But of course people buy used computers. Cheaply. Just remember to run a hard drive wiping program on it a couple of times and then reinstall XP and the drivers from scratch before you sell it.

I do :). New isn't always better. Modern computers may be faster, but they use cut down architectures that often makes them incompatible with older technology. So it's quicker but less versatile. New stuff is so cheaply mass produced that it doesn't have the physical longevity either.

The current design strategy is that as long as it runs World of Warcraft, Facebook, and iTunes, then 99% of the consumer market are satisfied. :)

I tend to buy refurbished parts and assemble them.
This time I bought a refurbished Gateway for $250. AMD Athlon X2 4400+, 2 GB RAM, 320 GB hard drive, 15 in 1 media reader. It looked brand new, checked with Gateway and they said it had been opened and returned. Tee hee. :D

If that is a socket 939 processor, the chip alone is worth around $100 due to scarcity of dual-core 939's.

The GeForce 7800 GTX appears to go for around $50-$80 used, if it is a DDR3 version.

Altogether around a $300 system I'm guessing, though it would be hard to get that. Not a bad rig, blows the doors off what I'm still running.
