Seen the Galactic Militia site?

If I ever played STO i would have be on a klingon ship just so I could blow up every fugly federation ship in the galaxy

But seriously, you would've thought that on designs such the Shi'kar and Zephyr, they could have worked harder on their appearances. Some designs look tacked together, like there wasn't much of a concept stage, if any, and as if not a lot of thought was put into design. I especially hate the blocky engineering section of the Zephyr class. Seriously, I could think of a better design for the engineering section! The blockiness of the a lot of the ships, and having to pay a fee every year to continue playing has put me off thus far.

Lets be honest here though - The point of the game isnt to stare at the modeling job of a particular space craft your only going to have for 2 weeks at a time. Its a game, you go do stuff.

The modeling is alrigt, I suppose. The main problems are the art direction and texture work, which I think are what we're all having violent digestive reactions to.

When I say it's bloody awful, I mean no offense to the modelers. It's directed soley at the art department and the texture artists :)

Still, it is nice to have a ship whose beauty you can admire. That is why I love ships such as the Nova class and Sovereign class.

@Herkimer Jitty: In this case, I can't tell if it the modelers, or the conceptual artists who are responsible for the look of the ships. If I could get a look at the concept art, that would probably tell were the responsibility for the art direction lies.

Most of the designs are either straight from the show, or variants of the ones straight from the show. So I'm not really sure where the problem is. Also, those hull textures are just one of several you can select in the game, and there is one you can select thats a bit closer to what you could consider the traditional trek hull, although even that's changed over the years.

The only design I really felt was yark worthy was the Olympic/hope/horizon group, especially the horizon.

Compare the STO Galaxy to a screencap of the six-footer Enterprise-D, and tell me with a straight face that the STO ship isn't a clumsy mockery.

The problem is a lack of cleanliness. The ships are cluttered, have cartoonish proportions and grimy hulls. More dirt and blockyness does not equal a more advanced design. Starfleet is all about clean lines and slick smoothness. Clutter is anathema to everything laid down by Jefferies, Probert, Sternbach, and others.

Does it look as clean as the enterprise D from the show? No, I can admit that. Although I still say one of the textures you can choose from does come pretty close. Would I call it a mockery? Well, the answer is again no. But then that's just me. (Again, blocking the hope/horizon/Olympus group from memory)

The only thing I liked out of those was the more spade-shaped main hull for the Saber class. But even that could've been executed a lot better.

I wonder how long it will be until someone tries redesigning some of the designs so that they look more consistent with what most people would expect from Star Trek vessels?

I lolled at the description off the Sovereign class:

Like most other starship designs influenced by U.S.S. Voyager's heroic return, Sovereign has an elongated saucer section connected to the main hull with a streamlined and interconnected neck area. The main hull has two up-swept pylons attached to it which lead to the ships nacelles.

Yes, ofcourse. The Sovereign class was designed AFTER Voyager came home.....
