See what "Day of the Doctor" with Ecclestone would have looked like!

See what "Day of the Doctor" with Eccleston would have looked like!

Andrew Wildman who has storyboarded a bunch of stories has self-published a booklet of his work which include scenes from the original version of "Day Of The Doctor" complete with Eccleston.

This is pretty amazing stuff and confirms how far things got before he decided not to do it.

Interesting. We could have had Eccleston but not Billie Piper.

The storyboards explain how the War Doctor ended up in the 1580s, which the episode didn't do.

Now I wonder how the eleventh Doctor would have met the ninth and tenth, if the ninth Doctor has the eleventh Doctor's entrance.

Damn.

Still, that's an interesting insight to see. Too bad it didn't happen, but the fact remains, it didn't happen. Oh, well.

Oh, this is fraking brilliant! I love it!

TARDIS. Maybe the Eleventh wants to investigate the origin of the paintings, and arrives exactly when 9 and 10 meet?

Maybe. Another possibility that just occurred to me is that the eleventh Doctor stays in 2013 and fills the role Clara had with the Vortex Manipulator.

The storyboards do show that the War Doctor isn't a straight one-to-one replacement for the ninth.

And of course this shows Moffat (not for the first time) to be a big fat liar; with his claim of having to create the War Doctor because none of the 'real' Doctors would have fought in the Time War revealed as the nonsense it always was..

Was there ever any doubt? :p

BTW, thanks for the share! Great find, indeed.

So, at the end of the episode, the 9th Doctor would have just forgotten he didn't actually destroy Gallifrey? That sounds considerably less poignant than what we got, somehow.

Does anyone have the full book? If so, does it say anything about how the 9th would have gotten along with his successors?

can we not use the slur "lame"? just because someone has problems with their legs doesn't mean they a synonym for inferiority and weakness.

Re: See what "Day of the Doctor" with Ecclestone would have looked lik

It wasn't really meant as a slur but as a synonym of weak - which is also ableist as a quick internet research has shown me. I've replaced it.

IIRC he said the Eighth wouldn't have fought the Time War (which I disagree with) and that using the Ninth would have created continuity problems as (Moffat believes) Rose is meant to be his post-regeneration story, which RTD very recently debunked.

Honestly, I think that part was pretty much copied for the War Doctor. In the scene with the three of them in the prison cell, much of the War Doctor's dialogue feels very obviously written for Eccleston.

Re: See what "Day of the Doctor" with Ecclestone would have looked lik

I'm currently rewatching the first series and the 9th Doctor isn't half as grumpy as the War Doctor. And while he looks older than Tennant and Smith it's not by that much so a lot of the jibes between the three wouldn't work.

Re: See what "Day of the Doctor" with Ecclestone would have looked lik

John Hurt was wonderful, but man what a wasted opportunity it was. I would have so loved to have all three Modern Doctors on the screen together.

Re: See what "Day of the Doctor" with Ecclestone would have looked lik

Maybe the lines that the Warrior directed at his younger follow-ups might've been differently written, to not sound as grumpy. But yeah, the Warrior did seem like a mix-up of the First and Ninth Doctors.

Re: See what "Day of the Doctor" with Ecclestone would have looked lik

That's very interesting because I always assumed that no one would even bother to consider Ecclestone for the 50th given his distance from the show.

That was momentarily interesting, but when I realized Eccleston was doing a dramatic reading of Wilfred Owen's "Dulce Et Decorum Est" I couldn't take it seriously any longer.

Why? Moffat was quite open that he had meetings with Eccleston about the fiftieth anniversary.

I always assumed that there wasn't a script for "Day of the Doctor" with the ninth Doctor in it, but if they got as far as storyboards then there may well have been. This leads me to wonder if there's some validity to the rumors at the time that Eccleston agreed to appear, only to withdraw from the project prior to filming.

Maybe it was optimism on Moffat's part that he could actually get Eccleston to do it. I certainly held out little or no hope of it happening though I was a little disappointed when we didn't get to see the War Doctor regenerate into the 9th.

Re: See what "Day of the Doctor" with Ecclestone would have looked lik

Ah... just because the storyboards have Nine and a little girl together, that doesn't mean that the Moment wouldn't have become Rose once Billie Piper said yes. The "from your future" line would work with Nine or War.
