See, THIS is Why I'm on Twitter

I made Wil Wheaton laugh!

So you see, it's not all updates about what I'm eating right now. :p

So, you talk to him regularly?

Actually, I don't. I read his posts but have only responded to him 3 or 4 times ever. He just happened to like that one!

He's really good about talking to people, though. You can see that he responds a LOT more than most celebrities do. He's a very interactive person. It's not like I'm all that special or anything.

Is that what twitter looks like?

I don't know why people just don't text each other.

Well I don't have Wil Wheaton's phone number, so it would be hard for me to text him.

Twitter lets him interact with fans without giving out personal info like that.

I kinda like that aspect of twitter. There have been a few I've spoken to - some shared jokes, some more in depth, but nice to get an 'inside' opinion.

Probably because it's tough for me to promote my newest blog posts to nearly 200 people without running up some large texting fees. Just for example.

Very cool, SWC. And now I know who this JeffCarpenter person I'm following is, too... :shifty:

See that's my problem - I really don't want to get a beep every three minutes when somebody updates their blog.

I am thinking more from MY point of view, which is all I care about in that I don't want to be bothered fifty times a day with stuff like this.

My mobile exists for MY benefit, not for others to interrupt me all the time.

It's not like you have to have tweets sent to your phone. I used to do that, and began to find it annoying, so I just check Twitter online and update from my phone on occasion. It's only intrusive if you want it to be intrusive.

I dont want to sound rude, as I am making a general point about Twitter and not towards you specifically, but, the above statement sums up my complete hatred of the thing. Your every thought is just not interesting enough to chronicle, whatever your latest blog entry is, is not compelling enough to be read, you as a person (the general you) are simply not interesting enough to get the kind of attention twitter allows you to get.

People get a following of a handful of people on there and suddenly think they are important, and that every one of that handful should be alerted to and should then read whatever you post straight away.

As bad as myspace and facebook were/are, twitter is a million times worse.

How is Twitter ANY different from what you posted right here?

Do you think you're important now that I read this?

O... kay. I blog about urban issues and municipal politics in Ottawa (you can check the link in my profile, if you like), not my personal life, so yeah, I think I have a good reason for trying to build an audience via Twitter. I'm not writing about myself, I'm trying to get the word out about issues I find important and\or interesting. It's hardly narcissism, it's more of a form of marketing.

And if people don't find what I have to say interesting, then there's nothing compelling them to follow me. All I'm trying to do is build an audience, and hopefully make some connections with people who can bring my work to an even larger audience (I'm mutually following a number of other Ottawa bloggers and journalists). If that makes me self-important, fine. I'm just trying to connect with my friends and my community.
