Spoilers Section 31 the reason for the Treaty of Algeron?

I like the idea that treaty is attributed to a federation atrocity.

Another twist, what if it wasnt a atrocity directed at the romulans? What if it was due to S31 working with their counterparts in the tal shir ? Both could of done something pretty rotton to the breen or Klingon then the romulans sensing a oppunity turned round and blackmailed the federation?

Hell, the explosion on praxis could of been a joint tal shir/S31 op as both would of wanted to take out the klingons.

The treaty appears lopsided to us for a fairly natural reason - because we only hear the UFP side of it. We really don't know what the Romulans had to stoop to in order to get the treaty signed. But treaties like that would be something desired by both sides, obviously: the Feds love peace-on-paper as a thing (witness their many treaties), and the Romulans want to further the cause of their star empire by proxy and remain separated from the rest of the galaxy if they possibly can (witness their two long periods of isolation).

Indeed, one has to wonder who won the original Romulan War. Since periods of isolation are a Romulan thing, perhaps the establishing of the RNZ was on their insistence, a condition dictated by the victor?

I have no problem with attributing all of the UFP's mishaps and failures to Section 31. Naturally, the UFP would attribute them that way, quite regardless of who really dropped the ball!
