Section 31--Let's try and settle this!

Is Section 31 justified in doing what it does to protect the UFP?

Hell Yes! The Dominion didn't play by rules of war, therefore the Feds were fair in all they did to win the war and save lives from both sides (sounds like WWII).

I would have S31 send unmanned drones loaded w/torpedoes crashing into the FWP (new and old) and ended the damn thing

Not that I'm disagreeing with you on what Section 31 was entitled to do. But when exactly did the Dominion not play by the rules of war?

Additionally, remember the phrase "All is fair in love and war"?

Using changelings as spies to disrupt the Federation and the Klingons from within.

Right now we send spies to enemy states, how is this any different? I can't give examples but I am sure theres been many cases of war and fights frought with divide and conquer techniques.

I wonder if there will ever be a story where Section31 actually do something which has a positive outcome for once

In Enterprise, there were. Although 31 did arrange the abduction of Dr. Phlox and Reed ended up in the brig for his troubles.

As for the question of the Dominion not playing by the rules of war, the Jem'Hadar do not limit themselves to military targets and the Founders have resorted to biological warfare.

Hell the Federation uses spies on nations that AREN'T at war with them.

Doesn't every nation/power?

More than likely.

However does that make it right? I don't think so.
The Dominion [and many historical/present day real life leaders] don't play by the rules, isn't a war better if it is as civilized [oxymoron alert!]as possible?

We could all move to wars like in "A Taste of Armageddon"! No blood, no bombs, just pell-mell killing! That was very orderly and civilized.

^Well, about that:

As the Ninteenth Undeniable Truth Of Life :mallory: says:

"War itself is an atrocity."

Frankly, one could argue that attempts to make it "clean" and "neat" are therefore self-defeating in the long run. They may look "nice" and "enlightened", but...

Going to the example Rom's Sehlat provided, in "A Taste For Armageddon", Kirk pointed out his firm belief in this Truth by arguing, "Look, war is ugly. That's what makes it a thing to be avoided."

"Rules of war" and all the other things, one could say, are just attempts to make it less "atrocious", when in reality that doesn't work--in fact, if anything, it prolongs the war, as there is less incentive for the warring parties to stop and say, "Enough of this carnage and destruction! We can't survive this!"

Once war breaks out, that means civility and diplomacy has failed--there is no denying otherwise.

The problem isn't that the Dominion sends spies AT ALL, it's that these spies are changelings who kill or abduct existing Federation citizens, replace them, and wreak havoc in their name.

So replacing present persons, instead of adding a new person to the population. If the Federation had it, would they use it? Would Section 31 use it?

Depends on if they thought it would be in the best interests of the Federation and, by extension, their best interests.

Besides, why bother going through the trouble of replacing someone when you can just convert them instead?
