Re: Pumpkin Spice Products Must be Stopped

Pumpkin Spice is the new fruitcake.

Now there's something I truly love. Dark, at least 50% fruit, and topped with nuts. I can wait until after the pumpkin spice goodies, though.
Have you tried the pumpkin spiced Oreo cookies? They are pretty good.

I have, but I thought they were a little skimpy on flavour. I'm guessing it was done to appeal more to kids palettes.

I just found this thread and I have absolutely no idea what pumpkin spice is. I feel sooo excluded.

It boggles my mind that there are people who don't know about pumpkin spice.

We are bombarded with it every year in the fall. It is synonymous with Starbucks, yoga pants, Uggs, and basic bitches.

It's what living in Communist Europe makes us miss out on. All the spices are socialized. :(

Seriously, though... I guess Starbuck's might have some pumpkin spice products over here, too but I generally avoid going there because everything there is: So. Fucking. Sweet.

So apparently it's not actually made of pumpkin but it's a spice mix with cinnamon and other stuff? Doesn't actually sound too bad.

Yeah, it's basically the spices you would use if you were making a pumpkin pie.

Well, it is a very North American phenomenon, pumpkin pie being especially associated with an American holiday. So people who live elsewhere such as { Emilia } did not grow up with it, and are spared the misery of being inundated with these products every year. (Though the actual pie is good!)

It's interesting that a cultural item that is so ubiquitous in one place can be completely unknown somewhere else.

I admit my comment was imprecise for the sake of brevity.
I was also thinking of preservatives and nitrates. I would prefer to go without them as much as possible.

No prob. And sorry if I was tetchy, but it's an issue that personally pisses me off as it's precisely where scientific illiteracy causes very real harm. Is there any evidence that preservatives and nitrates are dangerous?

Preservatives are what will allow me to live to 500 while making me appear younger. Nitrates are necessary as a future method for restarting my heart every century or so.

I'm counting on genetically modified food to enhance my body, kind of like the Six million dollar man, but for the price of a daily cheeseburger and fries. They can rebuild me, we have the technology.
Sadly for your dreams (though happily for the purposes of pointing out the stupidity and illogic of the anti-GMO crowd), nutritionally, GMO foods are indistinguishable from non-GMOs. Happily, we can still make strides in our progress towards cyborgism. I'm already a cyborg myself, and sometimes that's what gets me through the struggle!

They're engineering a wheat for celiacs, but the anti-GMO activists are blocking its development. This pisses me off. I would eat a pile of gluten if I could, but in the meantime I have to avoid delicious, delicious wheat like the plague. I want some genetically engineered delicious, delicious gluten-free wheat, dammit!

Yeah. Just cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, cardamom -- things you put in yummy, autumnal treats. I'v never had the Starbucks latte, though, because I agree that their stuff is way too sweet. They put something like four pumps of simple syrup into their coffees, and it boggles me that that's the default: that you have to ask to have it unsweetened.

In all seriousness, it feels like we're in the midst of a scientific dark age. Granted, it may not be as bad as that, but there is a wealth of information available to everyone, and instead of educating themselves, they've chosen to fight it, and have embraced stupidity.

So I hope you get your gluten free wheat; I am hoping for sugar-free, carb-free cake (that still tastes like cake).

^ Arguably, there is a popular tendency toward anti-intellectualism in general, not only in connection with scientific things.

I was looking forward to the low-carb donuts that Krispy Kreme said they were developing about ten years ago. Unfortunately, it seems like that never came to fruition. :(

Oh no, this year, Starbuck's has promised to put pumpkin in it. For the first time. Really.

Right, it's like Chinese lobster sauce. It's sauce for lobster, not sauce with lobster in it.

And I say, let's take pumpkin spice beyond the realm of food. Bring on the pumpkin spice soaps, deodorants and colognes!

You speak as if these aren't already things that totally exist...

Why would anyone want to smell like a dessert? To entice people into trying cannibalism?

Ugh. Fucking Foodbabe.
I wouldn't. Not if she were the last woman on earth.

I've tried, I swear I have, but the donuts either come out too carb loaded, or too rock hard. I will not give up.
