it's been so damned long since even the FIRST season aired that I was starting to think that even season 2 had been forgotten about.

Eh? It's been eight months since the finale aired. The average gap between the end of one season and the start of another with these new live action Trek shows has typically been a full year, and that was before the pandemic turned the world upside down.
