season 8 "probably" 12 episodes

This week's Radio Times has an interview with Moffatt, and mentions that "this will be the first season since 2010 to have a full run - probably 12 - with no more of that split-season nonsense."

Cue the eruptions of betrayal from fandom pointing out that 12 is one less than full.

I predicted months ago that this would probably happen though - that most likely if they run from autumn it'll end at Xmas, with the Xmas episode serving as a de fact 13th episode, so there'd no longer be a total of 14.

Mind you, I also wouldn't have been surprised if they'd reduced it to 10, as that's the common series length for the BBC now.

12 is 2 more than Game of Thrones, the same as the current run of 24 and roughly as many as most cable shows (walking dead etc). So I can cope with that. I just wish they'd show it soon - used to be by mid-May, we'd be well into the run!

I love how the weaselly sack of shit is now describing the split series, that he once heralded as his brilliant idea, as being "nonsense".

I think it's the RT scribe who actually gives us that line, but either way it's still a total U-turn.

Forget Levine - I'm pissed. Why the shortage? An episode's an episode.

Does Time of the Doctor then count as part of series 8? :p

Ian Levine's gonna be pissed.

He was pissed. He blew up over this about two weeks ago. Steve Manfred tried to set him straight. It was entertaining for about a day.

It's shit like this that really shows how Ian's brain works:

No we have NOT. Steven Moffat PERSONALLY assured me last year that the run would be 13, and I still have his e-mails saying so.

He hates to be lied to, and even if circumstances change beyond someone's control it affects him mentally.

Whoa, now. I'm confused. Moffat "PERSONALLY" told Levine the season has 13 episodes, and he has the e-mails to prove it? Maybe I'm missing something here, but to me "personally" means it was done in person, and an e-mail is not personally as it is not done in person.

Though to be honest, I don't care. Twelve is just fine as thirteen. Provided there's no mid season split (which there won't be) I'll be happy.

But food for though, could there actually be thirteen and Moffat just unknowingly said twelve without thinking?

Yeah, being short an episode is disappointing, but y'know, its worth it to be able to watch the series all in one go. Splitting the season really threw off the pacing.

Plus no more useless mid-season cliffhanger, and it frees up just a bit more writing time and budget for the remaining stories.

So any word on whether there'll be any two-parters?

Ian Levine's gonna be pissed.

Screw that guy. When ISN'T he pissed about something?

Moffat doesn't know?

It's amazing to me that a show that is as popular as it is both home and abroad that they can't consistently churn out episodes without bother.

Ian Levine's gonna be pissed.

Who the fuck is this Ian guy? Isn't just a fan like everyone else that isn't paid to work on Doctor Who? Why does his opinion matter?

Ian Levine walked into a vault at the BBC in 1978 and managed to help save almost 80 episodes that would otherwise have been junked - including the first Dalek story - over the next month. He's also personally saved around a dozen episodes by himself, mostly from Nigeria.

Ian unfortunately has an ego the size of Gallifrey and believes every single fan on the planet owes him. When people don't agree with his views he gets aggressive, VERY aggressive.

The recent discovery of nine missing episodes last year frustrated Ian as he believes - with whatever "proof" he has, usually his own gut instinct - that Phil Morris who found the episodes actually has more (like most of the missing episodes) and wants Phil to come clean. Morris however doesn't bow to Ian's wishes and so is remaining silent for as long as he wishes. Ian's rants have polarised fandom, with some believing Morris should own up, others believing Levine's outbursts are hindering efforts to return further episodes. He also slammed those that knew about the episodes return and didn't tell him about them at the time.

12 + the xmas special. If it plays late autumn they might run all 13 together, with the 'arc' finishing at ep 12 and the last episode staggered a few days to stay in sync with Christmas.

Why is 12 episodes suddenly a surprise? This is from December!

Speaking at this weekend's BFI Who event, the Doctor Who showrunner announced that Peter Capaldi's first series in the TARDIS will not be divided into two chunks, as the previous two series were. Series eight is expected to contain at least twelve episodes and to air in late summer/early autumn 2014.

Well before that there was a leaked email which mentioned both Smith's departure and the length of the the next series.

The name of the person who leaked the email, you ask?

Ian Levine.

There are signs, like the release dates of the next NSA batch, that indicate an early September premiere (at the latest) for series 8. BBC Books has Silhouette (Justin Richards), The Blood Cell (James Goss), and The Crawling Terror (Mike Tucker) scheduled for September 11th in the UK. A premiere date to account for that release would have the run over a good month before Christmas.

August 30th, I'll say.
