10-C was going about its business, and regarded life as being only what they look like.
Of course they know they destroy life! They just didn't realize it was "worthwile" life.
We humans kill thousands of cows and chicken every day for our consumption. We kill millions of insects and worms on every construction site.
Where do you draw the line? We know octopi are one of the most intelligent beings. Yet we like them deep-fried with lemon sauce.
If one day an octopus manages to talk to us, and tells us his story, and makes us aware all Octopi are aware & fear us - we likely would change our fishing habits. (But still no one would go to jail for having eaten Octopus before that)
Until then? Tough luck. Even though we are aware what we do - how smart those creatures are - we draw the line where we can directly empathize and talk with. Apes? We protect them. Octopi? Nah.

It's quite likely the 10C were aware & even cherished the "carbon units" civilisations & it's accomplishments - yet had no regard for or see any accomplishments for any individual unit, and figured that even with one or two whole planets less, these civilizations would survive.
