Season 3 vs previous two - Is it worth it?

I admit that I am one of the Discovery-haters. I simply don't like it mainly because of the total disregard of any canon and the denigration of the opinions of viewers.
OTOH, I am always open to new things.

So, the big question.
Is season 3 different enough to be watch as if it is a separate show?
I get the impression it is similar to Andromeda which I really liked.
Also, is it watchable without having watched through the whole of the previous seasons?

Technically, you could watch the third season without watching the first two. You can get by. If your main issue was canon, then it's a non-issue in the 32nd Century, since nothing took place here before.

But if your main issue was you didn't like the characters, then you're out of luck. Though Burnham is in a different place this season (not just physically but also mentally), and some Burnham haters actually like Burnham now.

I looked at your profile, so I see you're a DS9 Fan. So no need to worry about if you're a Gene's Vision Purist. You're not. So if you watch this season, please don't pearl-clutch about "Oh my God! What have they done?!" As a Niner, you're already there. The third season of DSC looks like it's about slow rebuilding. Something DS9 also did.

You will miss out on a lot of character stuff from the previous seasons. Discovery is often accused of focusing too much on Burnham, but rest of the characters and their relationships are also developed. Especially in the second season.

Hate is a strong word. If you really did hate it, it’s probably not for you now or ever.
This. While S3 is definitely taking a whole new chapter (on purpose) if there is the true belief that it "disregarded canon" (to quote the OP) then why would this season be any different?

I would say go watch something that is actually enjoyed.

I would say stay away. You either like something or you don't. No need to torture yourself with something you've already established isn't your thing. I didn't like VOY. I just stopped watching. I didn't get all spun up about it or post 1000 things online about how awful it is. And, I respect the fans who DO like the show too much to pee in their cornflakes for no reason, or simply due to a matter of personal tastes.

Life is too short to waste on things that don't appeal to you.

At best, I’m lukewarm to DSC. I’ve gotten past the fact that CBS has no intention of making this show (or SNW, for that matter) a believable prequel to TOS. I’m now just judging it based on its own merits. And I’d say just keep watching it. It probably won’t get better, but I don’t think it will get worse. At least it’s better than that self-serving Stewart & Spiner reunion crap-fest that was PIC season 1.

It's interesting how the people who really like the show say "nah, bail dude" and the people who don't really like the show say "hey, give it a shot...you might like it'

VERY strange! :ack:

The reason I gave a one word answer is that if somebody starts out that they hate the show, then list the reasons they think the shows sucks, then asks whether they should watch the show it 1) seems like they just dislike the show 2) wanted to have a pop at the show 3) won't like the show because they 'hate' it already. So really, although I like it, I can't recommend it to somebody who hates it, or hates the first two seasons. So, ya know, it's a no from me. Don't waste time on things you hate.

I had the same motivations for saying "no" as well...

I don’t hate Discovery. I like the crew a lot, but I’ve never cared for the overall plot arcs. Individual episodes and character moments carried the show. But this season is so far lacking both. The season three arc is silly based on bizarre science even for Star Trek. The individual episodes seem to be going in a circle with not much happening, and I’m not getting any giggles from these really wonderful actors. If anything their actions are becoming as opaque and senseless as Voyager’s often did. So, if you didn’t like it then you I don’t think you’re going to like it now.

I think my reasons for saying "nah, bail" are basically self-serving. I'd rather not add one more angry person to the discussion mix....haha!

Me too! I got really burned out by the very vocal “STD haterz” in the first couple of seasons. Not that I don’t respect dissenting opinions, but it was so bad it really sucked a lot of the joy out of what was otherwise me just really enjoying weekly Trek again for the first time since DS9 ended. I’m glad a number of the critics have come round now, and I hope many more do. But I’m still a little exhausted by the polarisation

I guess there is a wide range of opinions.
Was hoping for someone who disliked the first two seasons like I did and has returned to check it out.

I guess I might have to volunteer to be that person ....

Not really. I don’t believe I should be the arbiter on whether or not someone tries something. People have to experience things for themselves to truly know whether or not it is for them.
