Searching for Dark Matter.

I'm not familiar with the math involved in that particular experiment, but I suppose they computed the probability and signatures for many different interaction, so they should be able to discriminate between different particles and brush off neutrinos and other known beasts.

They're hoping to catch decay products of dark matter particles - conceivably it might happen, although the chances of seeing it are infinitesimally tiny. There was a lot of excitement a while ago, mentioned in the article, where they found an event that may be something to do with this but it wasn't one hundred percent definite.

As the LHC is being fired up, I'd put more money on some phenomenon to do with supersymmetry turning up - the idea being that if we learn about supersymmetry, it's more than likely that we'll start finding answers to the dark matter problem.

I tend to agree.

These may be exciting times for particle physics... if they could manage to make the LHC, you know, actually work. I blame the Swiss. ;)

I found it!

It was right next to the Higgs boson under my bed!!

Oh wait...no...it's just some lint and a marble...
