Sean Avery suspension

What do you guys think?

I think it's a bit of BS... certainly, at least, at the NHL level. If the team wants to suspend him because he made a sexist, un-PC comment, that's their choice.

But c'mon. The NHL? Bettman?

It's only because our lecherous media latched onto this story that anyone outside of the 6 people (including myself) that watch pro hockey know about this story.

Pffft.

I think that the NHL crossed the line
Avery did not use profanity
He should not have been punished for what he said

Altho, the man is a moron for breaking up with a woman as beautiful as Eliza!

You can't view this situation from this week's comments on their own, because on their own, they are not suspension worthy.

It wasn't this comment that got him suspended, this comment was the straw that broke the camel's back. The guy's a total fat-headed pig, and I guess the NHL used this week's incident to throw the hammer at him.

I've been trying to find out what he said (I don't really follow hockey).

He said that some other player is dating his "sloppy seconds"? Really?

He got suspended for that?

That's crazy. All the stupid things pro athletes get away with, and this guy is suspended for saying "sloppy seconds"?

Granted it's not very smart, and I don't know anything about Avery, but that seems unbelievably harsh.

What other things has Avery doen/said to contribute to this negative image? I'm not doubting that it's been well-earned. Too many people hold that view of him for it to be much else but truth. Still, I'd like to know what else he's done, because considering what else the league has to deal with this seems more than Draconian considering the offense.

The guy is an ass...
But he is a smart ass...
They changed the rules on him... he wasn't doing anything illegal

As for this comment, let him talk.

Did he say anything that isn't true? I'm sure Cuthbert could issue a denial/refutation if she so desired. She seems to have taken the high road. On the other hand, perhaps she's too busy letting the new guy bang her to care.

Sniping between exes is a time-honored tradition. The NHL condones brutality, but when someone questions the questionable honor of a "lady," their collective panties wad up?

Whatever.

I've never been a fan of Avery, and yeah he does stupid things...often. This comment alone wasn't worth the suspension but as said above it was kind of the combination of everything. At the same time though, any team that signs him knows what they are getting into wwhen they sign him. Oh well, it's not really anyones loss at this point except his and his family. I guess I am more confused at what took so long for something to happen.

It's B to the S.

Sure I can understand the league wanting to look all serious and not condone talk like that, that's fine. So suspend him for a game. To suspend him for 6 is absolutely ludicrous. Players are hitting guys from behind and in the head and they are either getting away with it or getting lesser suspensions than Avery got, that's ridiculous.

And don't forget, despite all his antics, Avery has never been suspended before so it's not like he's a repeat offender.

Just another example of this fracking league getting involved when this should have been settled on the ice. Avery would no doubt think twice if he took a few shots to the head from Iginla or Phaneuf, probably would have resonated more than this bullshit suspension.

Maybe when Avery met Bettman in New York for his hearing he told him to go fuck himself, who knows.

The league suspension gave the Stars the ability to act, though. By all accounts locker room cancer doesn't begin to describe Avery.

When nobody on your team comes out in favor or support of you, you know something's off. Hell, even Bertuzzi still has supporters and I think he's one of the biggest chicken shits in the league.

The league suspension was way out of whack, though. I think that if you cause an injury to a player due to a cheap shot, you're out as long as that player is out.

You could have said the same thing about Bob Probert or Tie Domi, though.

The suspension was pretty outlandish, but the Stars announcing that Avery would not be allowed to return to the team tipped the scales into the "fucking ridiculous" category. Exactly what did the team think it was getting when it signed him, a 30-goal highlight reel phenomenon? No. Avery's a smug jackass who excels at grinding, getting under the other team's skin and making a general nuisance of himself to everyone around him.

That Brett Hull is now trying to take the high road and say that Avery's conduct has been unacceptable just reeks of the front office having blinders on.
