I might have mis-spelled the name but I love the cause. Does anybody here watch and or support organizations like this? I have followed it since the first episode. Believe it or not it was the star trek movie The Voyage Home that got me aware to the problem. I don't hate the Japanese people and I am sorry for them becuase of the hardships they are going through, but what they do and allow isn't right.

I think whaling should be illegal unless it is by indigenous people using traditional methods.

The Japanese whaling industry is heavily subsidised by the Japanese government. Without these subsidies the industry would go broke. The industry isn't profitable so the demand can't really be great enough to warrant continuing the trade.

I agree on the first part, it was too big to fit into the poll.

The second part I agree on to. But what they do is fool the japanese people and sell dolphin and whale as other fish.

It really does not matter. Who will enact that law? Who will enforce that law? Would they continue to hunt them anyway? These are the real issues and problems with such a law.

Because of the protests the Japanese ended their 'whaling season' early without reaching their quota. So it doesn't seem that they will necessarily continue to hunt them anyway.

If the Japanese government stopped the subsidies than Japanese whaling would stop for good.

If the Japanese were fair, they would also allow the US to compete in the Japanese market. However, reality is that governments nor life are always fair.

Yes, I don't understand the poll at all. Do you mean that whaling should be outlawed in countries but allowed in international waters? I don't get it.

I'll add another criteria. For subsistence reasons. If they're not actually hunting them for a significant source of food, they shouldn't be hunting them either.

Anyway, for the first time in history, the Japanese fleet ended their campaign early and it is clear Sea Shepherd had a lot to do with it.

Interestingly, the Nisshin Maru is being used currently to aid in relief efforts after the earthquake and Tsunamis, which it would have been able to do if it were still in the Antarctic. Annoyingly, Sea Shepherd tried to claim that they helped save Japanese lives by forcing the factory ship back to port, which might be technically true, but still extraordinarily dickish.

I'm surprised the Japanese rolled over the way they did. I expected them to use force ("accidental" collisions) to stop the Sea Shepherds. Sea Shepherd might have actually won.

Well, we'll see this season on Animal Planet, but my guess is they harassed them to the point of unprofitability. Certainly, ramming a small ship is one thing, sinking a vessel full of people would be entirely different. The bad PR outweighed any minimal gain.

Those guys are a bunch of crazy dipshits. I like the cause, not the methods.

The butyric acid bombs make me laugh though. I worked in the chem lab in college, mixing solutions, putting out equipment, that sort of thing. The prof who ran the lab used to give me small bottles of various chemicals to refill using the big stock jugs they had. He accidentally gave me butyric acid instead of some other chemical one time. Not knowing better, I just had at it, instead of using a hood. That stuff smells like someone ate a pizza and threw it up an hour later.

The countries part was about corporations ran by the those governments like japan.
The small population of people who kill maybe one or 2 whales and live off it, is something else.
