Scribblenauts: Write Anything Solve Everything - E3 Game of the Show

Now that I have a 10th Doctor Scribblenauts avatar I figure it's past time to make a thread about it. For those of you who don't know Scribblenauts is a puzzle game coming to the DS this September. In Scribblenauts you solve puzzles in levels by creating objects just by typing in what you want. There are tens of thousands of objects in the game, and apparently just about anything you can think of (with exceptions like items that would be copyrighted or anything that would get the game anything higher then an E10+ rating).

Scribblenauts won the Gamespy, IGN, and Gamespot E3 2009 Game of the Show award. This is the first time I can remember a hand held game ever winning game of the show.

It's all about post 217. To be honest, after reading that back when it was first posted I've stayed away from reading about the game... I think the more surprised I am when it's released, the happier I'll be in the interim

I asked for three. I jokingly asked for a female Shepard, since I don't like the bald space marine guy but I then asked for Alicia from Valkyria Chronicles and Akari from an anime called Aria and someone just posted their Akari. I already respect Photoshop maestros, but the Scribblenauts stuff is pretty cool.

I still like the Jack Bauer with man purse avatar.

I love that the President of the company said that he would put that into the game. Talk about becoming famous.

Scribblenauts is one of the few games I psychologically require. Either I will buy it day one, or I will mentally fracture and wake up a week later with my clothes covered in blood.

Maybe I'd better pre-order it.

^It's the ability to solve the puzzles in any way you can think of. It's one of the most brilliantly original ideas I've seen in years.

I must say I find the object-oriented design of this game really fascinating. I read up on how the game system works and it's really impressive.

Well just so I'm not misunderstood, I just want to make it clear that I'm not making fun of anybody who likes the game. I'm not one of these people that think just because I do or don't like something, everybody else should feel that way too. I'm just saying that I don't get it, (which is why I feel out of touch.)

EDIT TO ADD: That's not to say I'm not impressed by the technology behind it, because that seems pretty amazing.

See, I love the idea of it, but I'm still skeptical. Games that are extremely innovative tend to suffer in the fun department. It's as if the developers forget about the gameplay. Sure, it'll be great for 30 minutes while you enter in a variety of crazy things, but then what? Fiddling around in sandbox mode gets boring fast -- I need a game to play somewhere in there.

Each level revolves around obtaining "Starite." You get rewards for doing this, too. There have certainly been puzzle games with much thinner premises that were still fun.

I'm not sure there actually is a "sandbox mode," you are timed on each level and I suppose you'll have to think quickly to figure out how to get your Starite before time runs out.

I'm interested, just skeptical. I've played way too many games that were hyped as revolutionary and innovative that turned out to be terrible or just plain boring. We'll see how it turns out next month.
