Hi ST lovers
I'm a newbie on trekbbs (introduction that should disclaimed me from evil comment :klingon:) and was looking for a place to share some knew knowledges.

I just discovered yesterday a weird fact watching star trek III: during the ceremony to put back Spock mind in its place (must be a real pain to be in McCoy's one), the vulcan guard behind are wearing white dresses depicting a mask which appears to be exactly the same as in the movie scream by Wes Craven.

It is more than a coincidence isn't it ?

And here I thought the actual mask shows up years before Scream came out, disguised as a background alien in the bar maybe...

Silly, silly me!

That explains all the horror questions during Spock's quiz in STIV. I bet the killer was pissed that he answered them all right, even the trick Friday the 13th Mrs. Vorhees question.

It's a really neat coincidence and you have a good eye, but there's no way the two are related.

I guess I'm the only one genuinely impressed so far... that is an incredible likeness!

Actually, I had no idea what a scream mask was and had to look it up. Didn't realize it was a slasher film from the 90s..never saw it. But after looking at the mask it is indeed uncanny

If you honestly think that Wes Craven created his Scream mask based on a Vulcan outfit seen in a decade-old ST movie for a few seconds, then gimme some of what you're smokin':)

(but yeah, it does look similar.)

Why not ? Everyone has got his own private inspirations including weird ones. What if Craven's crew happened to saw the movie and said "that's it !". Inspiration come from this kind of details someone happened to saw once (as explain in the making-of of LOTR by P. Jackson for example). I was checking a lot of scream cast relationship with cast of star trek III through imdb oracle of bacon but it was a blank shot...

At first, I would not believe it either, I was wondering if the scream appeared somewhere else in history, like a good old pattern everyone would use and reuse but i couldn't find anything. I just say that it is a lot too similar to be a coincidence and as such, credits should go to the older one :vulcan: doesn't it ? ^

Jeez, dude, I just wanted some of your weed.:)

Hey nice, i didn't thought about Munch painting (shame on me) and it is absolutely true that this reference should be mentioned (did the vulcan knew Munch ? They scream sometimes ? no...). Of course the name of the painting plays in its favor and its famousness also, nevertheless when you look at it the eyes are clearly different and the shape of the mouth is also a bit different from Munch but similar in scream and ST movie, so mystery (for me, with all my naiveness/weed/cognac) remains :p

It is funny to see how a reference such as Munch's one is a lot more credible than a ST one, but ways of hermeneutic are not easy :techman:

Spock would be a terrific emotionless scream killer with his actor talent demonstrated in the excellent "enterprise incident" episode, brrr
