I just kinda stumbled on this forum...so I thought I might as well try and share some of my interests in Star Trek. I will add a few different posts for each of my projects. Understand that I am just an ordinary guy, not really good at anything but enjoy trying.
First off, I have built a star trek home theater and in the theater I needed something infront of the screen to stop little fingers from leaving finger prints. So i decided to build a 12foot x 2foot Star Trek Diorama. I purchased as many of the Art Asyum 7" figures that my wife would allow me to buy and started a mixed match themed diorama. (the diorama will be featured in a new post...watch for it :0) Anyways, in the diorama, I wanted to include a few space craft and it was really hard to find something that looked to scale. I tried a resin model of the Delta flyer....but when done, it was just to small. I knew that I wasnt going to find something that would meet the scale of the 7" figure (It would have to be over 4 feet long) but I thought I mightfind something that looked good and fit in the diorama case. Unfortunately, I couldn't so I decided to try and scratch build something on my own (which I had never done before). In fact, I hadn't built a model since I was a kid but figure, hey what have I got to lose. So...what do I build it out of? Well, I found some left over plastic horizontal blind slates.
This stuff was made from a high density plastic material, 2 inches wide by 4 feet long and about 1/8 of an inch thick.
I experimented a little with it and found it was easy to heat and shape, easy to cut and easy to paint. So decided to give it a try.
I then downloaded a "Paper Model Template" from "http://ninjatoes.wordpress.com/" (he has some incredible stuff.) I blew the templates up as big as I could and started to cut.
I used my first small build of the resin Delta Flyer as a reference model and began to piece things together. The next link shows the resin model and the bottom of the new build to give a size reference.
As I built, I decided to add some Christmas lights to light up my creation along with using colored CD cases as my windshield and engine and running lights. I grabbed all my used accessories from the 7 figures and added them as the Borg technology used in the engine and weapons systems. The next set of pictures will show how the build is actually coming along.

As you can see, there is still lots to do...the back end needs to be completed, panel scribing and detailing as well as weathering. I have put the model in the diorama for now, until I can find some spare time but I just wanted to share this with you. I will update this post as the project continues.. Hope you like seeing it as much as I do building it. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions, as my modeling skills are very limited.
