Scotty's backstory - Pegg style!

ITL

Vice Admiral
Admiral
In his latest blog post Simon Pegg has provided a short history of Scotty's life prior to the movie. It's just for shits and giggles and obviously isn't OFFICIAL CANON! or anything.

He's even included various Scottish locations in the backstory to cover his bases....:D

Heh, this caught my eye:
I'm off to Barrington Dog Park in LA to walk Minnie now. If anyone sees me there and says hello, I will give them $2.
That park's only about 2 miles from where I was living, just three years ago. Scotty's in my old neighborhood, but it's too far to go now for $2, though.

That's a 15-minute drive from where I used to live in La La Land, and that was only four months ago! Darn.

So let's MAKE it canon! :) I think it would do James Doohan proud. Sometimes I'm surprised at the stories actors come up with in preparation for a role to provide motivation, and that certainly sounds like the Scotty who started the bar fight rumble. Leave it to a Scotsman to take on the Klingons in a pub!

I wonder if anyone is two bux the richer, right now....

How can anyone not love that guy?
Absobloodylutely!

We knew The Pegg was a Big Fat Geek like the rest of us - and now there can be no doubt!

There is something familiar about the comment about Prerera Theory (regarding photon torpedo detonation) In one of the many trek novels. anyone have any ideas? I have way to many books to look through to find it.

Soar Dude

Simon Blogged: "I still haven't been able to get the smell of dilithium out of my kilt."

Love his background for Scotty.

before being accepted to Starfleet Academy on a scholarship. However he deferred his placement in favor of practical experience in space, working aboard mining ships and freighters, in particular the USS Deirdre,

What exactly is a civilian mining ship or freighter doing with a USS name? USS is used only for Starfleet ships. Civilian ships should have SS.

I shudder to think what Deirdre's registry is.

That's really a rather nice little backstory, including the part about underage drinking and getting into bar fights over physic theory.

Pegg either read "The Kobayashi Maru" by Julia Ecklar or somebody told him about it.

Disproving the field theory about photon torpedoes is straight from that Trek book.

It would be.... the USS DEIRDRE-0007 ...

...one of the first Federation Merchant Marine, sponsored freighters.

Can you guess what the name of the first ship in the class is???

It's the... WORMHOLE CLASS !!

Given the history of the movie's writers with Trek novels in general, I wouldn't be surprised if he'd been handed a copy somewhen along the line. Was he able to lay hands on Rotsler's ST II Biographies as well, perhaps? Granted that the details of the two volumes may conflict, but who knows?

Oddly enough, I agree. I was expecting Red Dwarf style jokiness but that read perectly straight to me, even down to the lighter bits. A nice little backstory indeed.

I know in the book "Kobayashi Maru", Scotty used an arcane theory to damn near make it back to federation space. Something about the way Klingons wolfpack in threes for mutual shield support and there being a sweet spot that if you hit it just right... Apparently the Academy Cadre thought he'd pulled a Kirk. :)

That might be it.

That's certainly it. The idea was, Scotty knew that the academy's simulator would interpret what he did incorrectly (with the action being in his favor) because while the math of the act worked out in reality the theory did not hold up in real-world testing.

I don't know if someone had to hand Pegg a book... after all, he IS an admitted Trekkie. The guy seems intelligent enough to pick out a book all by himself. :vulcan:
