Scotty working the Transporter.....

EnsignHarper

Captain
Captain
..almost ALL the time? Even with a smaller crew at the time. - you NEVER saw Geordie at the controls in TNG...

Could it possibly be protocol at the time, since the transporter is still fairly new, that the Chief Engineer handle the controls whenever the Captain is involved...unless the CE is a) In command b)Part of the landing party or c) The show can afford John Winston for a day's work? Speaking of which, Kyle sure got beat up/and or threatened quite a bit, didnt he?

By the time of TNG, durn near ANYbody can operate the transporter in a pinch, the thing is so automatic...Although in Space Seed Marla Mcgivers is shown beaming Khan over to the Botany Bay..I know Starfleet cross-trains, but a HISTORIAN???

I may be misremembering, but wasn't Winston Shatner's stunt double?

Like Siler on Stargate SG-1 was RDA's stunt double and the running gag is he ends up getting smashed in the face/pushed down the stairs/bonked on the head all the time. :)

Well Jimmy Doohans hands were in a lot of the cutaways.

Often didnt matter who was working the controls, it was Jimmy's hands in the close up. :D

The TOS transporter was quite a powerful and dangerous machine that often broke down. You needed the Chief Engineer on hand to work the bloody thing. Look what happened in TMP, thats the last time they let Rand have a go.

By TNG it seemed quite commonplace, even mundane.

KRYTON: Nope, John Winston is an actor, not a stunt man. Paul Baxley was Shatner's frequenly used stunt double (although there were others). Baxley had dialog as Ensign Freeman in Tribbles.

jon1701: Jimmy Doohan's hands were not in the close up shots, since that person seems to have ten fingers rather than Doohan's nine.

This is a joke, yes?

Well, it doesnt match with the some of the wide shots, I'll put it that way. I've been watching a fair bit of season one again lately - and this occurs in at least one instance if not more. I'll have a look tonight. Might have been The Enemy Within but dont hold me to that.

Essentially you get a stock close-up of a pair of hands (could be jimmys - he hasnt got his fingers spread out) working the controls with Lt Commander stripes on the cuff. You then cut to a wide of another transporter technician sans stripes (could have been kyle).

Sort of like those stock shots of the viewscreen that occasionally show the back of George Takei's head even though he isnt in the episode.

Cant be more specific than that at the moment. I know there are much bigger continuity fuck ups than that in TOS, I just thought I'd point it out.

I was recently told that when John Winston wasn't acting in the 60s he was a production person's barber! (We have guessed it may have been Gene Coon, since Winston's appearances seem to coincide with Coon's time on TOS.)

Makes me also ponder if John Winston was involved with giving the male Starfleeters their regulation pointy sideburns?

^ It was never Doohan in the closeups. He was missing a finger so they ALWAYS used a shot of someone else's hands.

...except in That Which Survives!

I don't remember which book it was where Kirk wonders if he should be concerned that his chief engineer spends so much time in the transporter room.
