Scott Confirmed for Alien Prequel

Oh, thank the good Lord.
I think this just moved from the 'Oh God, not another prequel' camp to the 'Must-See' camp. Great news - if I'm correct, isn't this Scott's first sci-fi movie since Blade Runner?
Will we see the tale of the Space Jockey at last? Or perhaps a crew that picked up the signal before the ill fated Nostromo?

Though, to be honest, I'm not that interested in a prequel to Alien. So that's playing into my surprise.

There's no where to go but up after the plot vacant Alien v Predator duo aimed at console gamers.
A prequel to the original Alien has plenty of potential, given the conspiracies in the first two films... how the Company became aware of the creatures in the first place. How did they plan to use them? Who the hell thought they would be an ideal biological weapon to use against an enemy? What the heck was that giant guy sat in the gun platform chair in Alien anyway? I know there's probably an extended media answer to that, in the Black Horse comics or whatever... but I was never that deep into it. The Quadrilogy boxset was as far I went.
Either way, if Ridley Scott has some control over this project... then I'm happy. No way will it be a one dimensional actioner like more recent sci fi. I figure it will have depth in terms of a modern commentary about governments, big business and the military, in amongst all the usual creature slasher stuff.

I'm thinking it may be a previous crew story the more I think about it.
Some of the dialog between crewmwmbers made it sound like shipping out with a science officer onboard was uncommon.
While the presence of Ash could have been concidence, it's also possible that another ship happened upon the Space Jockey craft and met disaster. If any record of that encounter survived, the company could have placed Ash on Nostromo deliberately to investigate.

I want some zany revelations that blow the lid off the original films like finding out that Jonesy the cat used to have rocket jets!

I'm happy, but I'm skeptical. I have to wonder if even Scott can pull this franchise out of the hole.

Not that I can think of (can't be bothered to look at IMDB). Apparently he was somewhat annoyed not to be offered first dibs on Aliens, though.

yes..I agree. Alien and then Aliens, are a great double-bill because they are so different from each other, but both are great movies. One has to wonder if he will just totally forget (as he should) the A v P series. He might go into what lifeforms ended up dead on that planet where John Hurt got infected...I hope they are NOT Predators...

This is one film I don't care about. Problem being the mystery element of the alien ship is now going to be ruined. Instead of the millions of theories fans can create about it, its going to be de-mystified. Plus yes, hollywood is creatively bankrupt. Pathetic really.

So I take it you didn't like TREK XI? Just wondering. Because, to me, I don't care what they write; as long as they write it good. And since Scott was the one who got it going, I will give him a broad brush on this one. But the trend to slam hollywood for making remakes, or sequels, slaps of peer driven dribble and holds as much water as a noddle strainer.
