Scotland Yard Fears Trekkie Uprising

I'm now very concerned, is this board run by Scotland Yard as a way of monitoring us and our eventual world takeover? :vulcan:

Aww man they're on to our trek-centred socialist-revolution? Damn.

What with Trek preaching tolerance, science and peace WE are the group to be watched.

Yes it sounds ludicrous. It comes as no surprise, though, I remember when it came out that the FBI were keeping tabs on/infiltrating old-age pension and vegan cooking meet-ups.

At that time it did seem like something to take seriously. In the lead up to Y2k, security forces had to know that millenniums are known for stirring up activity in fanatical fringe groups, and as religion has become less central to our society, science fiction has to some extent replaced it in the popular imagination. The Heaven's Gate suicide cult was very much into TNG (also X-Files); they thought it showed the kind of world they would go to after dying. The Aum cult in Japan (whose attack on the Tokyo subway killed 12 and injured many more) used science fiction to illustrate and justify their teachings. (Going back a bit further, Charles Manson referenced Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land as part of his belief system.) There were probably other groups we didn't hear about because they didn't actually kill anyone.
Hell, even long after Y2K, I remember you had people actually attempting and successfully committing suicide because the world depicted in "Avatar" didn't exist. Just a little chlorine for the gene pool, IMO. The libertarian in me, though, finds the concept of this kind of surveillance thoroughly abhorrent, with respect to the target audience, and every aspect of it deserves a very heart-felt .

Moving on...

As much as I despise the idea of the government spying on me, I like the idea that the government found me a security threat, then upon spying on me, discovered they were full of crap.

What would a Trekkie rebellion actually look like? It would have to be pretty idealistic. "You must evolve to be a more peaceful human being! Or else, we will...leave you alone until you are ready!"

F'ing hilarious.

I work at a cafe that has on its menu a big breakfast with everything, called the Universe. Because of its size, two people will often share it, and when ordering it will often say "..we'll have the Universe to share!..." - which gives me an excuse to weave in some comments about a shared Universe sounding "like something from Star Trek!" These comments are always well received, which comes as no surprise given the kind of community around here.

It would be hilarious if federal agents are carefully going over the random crap I put on the internet for signs I might be radicalizing.

"Jones, report on JirinPanthosa!"
"He liked a cat picture his aunt posted. Going through database to see if that's code for 'Begin the attack'".
"Keep an eye on it! And comb through his old webcomic again for subversive propaganda!"
"One more thing. He posted that he's watching a movie created by a man who spent years on the communist sympathizers list."
"You don't mean..."
"Right. Charlie Chaplin!"
"Put the base on high alert!"

If they did keep accurate files, they probably have better records of the Caption contest winners than I do. Hmmmm.... next major milestone I should just ask them who has won the most Klingon Belly Laugh Awards rather than checking myself... :rommie:

You know you're doing something right when you're counter-cultural enough to scare intelligence agencies :P

Reminds me of a funny thing that happened a long time ago. Many of you know that I run the Ship Schematics Database. For a time, before I started using Google Analytics, I used this free statistics app called "NedStat" just to see where some of my page hits were coming from. Back in '97, I added a section for "Miscellaneous/Non-Aligned Races" as a place to put all the flotsam that wasn't Fed, Klingon or Romulan. One of the sub-sections in that page was the "Bajoran Militia". Not days after I added that section, my government and military page hits skyrocketed. Remember this was back in the mid-late 90's, when they thought that every white boy with a gun clearly HAD to be a part of some right-wing militia movement. I laughed my ass off so hard on that one it took me weeks to sew it back on. Someone was clearly looking for a Klingon in the woodpile back then!

You know, it occurs to me that any organization seeking to prevent social progress may actually be defying its own mandate, and may actually, by its own rules, have to self-terminate. Now where have I heard that before....?

Dear Scotland Yard/NSA/Chicom Crack Monkey Brigade/Not-the-KGB, et al:

Although yesterday my stool ran a little loose, today she's purring along at normal spongy consistency. Stop. Please update your data files. Stop. Will send video confirmation on request. Stop.
