Scorpion - Janeway missed a trick

cwl

Commander
Red Shirt
Ok so in Scorpion Janeway came up with the idea to provide the Borg with the nanotechnology to defeat species 8472 in return for safe passage through Borg space.

but Janeway missed a trick. Safe passage through Borg space was no big deal.

Why didn't Janeway ask for an exchange in technology say modified nanotechnology in return for transwarp technology to get Voyager home.

Or couldn't Janeway ask the Borg to tractor them to the alpha quadrant?

Even if the Borg wouldn't be willing to provide transwarp technology(they were sensitive about it) I dont see why tractoring them to the alpha quadrant wouldn't have been a problem.

Don't think you would want the Borg anywhere near earth!!

Who's to say they wouldn't assimilate the Klingon's on the way home!!!

If I were Janeway I would have asked for BOTH safe passage through their space AND their transwarp technology. The Borg were desperate and Janeway had the upper hand. At least she could have tried for it and then they turn her down saying safe passage would be all they'd provide.

I assume you're envisaging the episode working out the same though since they lost the Borg cube in Pt 2.

She knew the Borg were going to backstab them no matter what happened, so asking for a way back to the AQ was pointless.

Plus, the show would be over. ;)

She didn't have a "real" pact with the Borg. Both 8472 and the Borg were too dangerous for that, and she knew it. A betrayal by the Borg "allies" was inevitable. I think that was the whole point of the episode.

Well we ALL know the Borg can travel to Earth at will, so may aswell make them useful.

Well, the Borg were rather adamant about Voyager keeping their end of the bargain as well.
Besides, they wouldn't want to risk too much and having the Feds backstabbing them (for which they were prepared).
And as it was already said, Janeway knew the Borg would eventually back-stab them.
Plus, Janeway knew the Borg aren't to be played with (much), and asking for the TW tech and towing them to the AQ might have resulted in forcing their hand.

Chakotay flushed 3 dozen Borg out Voyagers Airlock.

Shorter stubbier fingers and Anika would have been *(&^ed dead too.

If Chakotay hadn't murdered all those Drones, would the Borg have turned on Janeway?

The Borg really shouldn't care about a starship using technology they are already intimate with and species they have already sampled. Voyager had nothing worth the expense of assimilation to offer the collective other than spite.

At the time... they had the technology to fight species 8472.
So that was the crew's only bargain chip.

Plus, the Borg doesn't like other species using their technology.
They aren't in the business of sharing it... but taking, and usually, the Borg do return for their damaged ships and tech (As was demonstrated - unless they don't know the whereabouts of the ships/tech in question).

Also, we don't know if the Borg wouldn't have turned on Voyager either way.
The Borg provoked Chakotay into flushing them out the airlock in the first place even after telling them of their intentions.
Though to be honest, that was a stupid decision because as Janeway already said to him, he was looking for a first chance to get out of the entire 'alliance' prospect in the first place.

Also, what are 3 Borg drones to the Collective?
Nothing.
Besides, 7 of 9 remained there and she was their interpreter, I would venture to say there's a possibility she was more important than the other 3 that went into space.

The Borg think that they are the good guys.

They assimilate out of love.

When you see a homeless person choking to death on a half cooked rat... A good person will buy that bum a bowl of soup, a fresh set of clothes and a room for the night, but a truly wonderful person will grab that hobo by the hand, herd them into AA meetings, enroll them in the learning annex to study stenography at night and...

Henry Higgins: SuperBorg.

The Borg want everyone's lives to be better, and if they don't have enough time to assimilate everyone just right now, maybe the Borg can make the lives of all those poor shlubs in the Universe a little better while they're waiting for the wonder of assimilation.

Besides?

The Borg don't invent.

The only way they can get better tech, is by farming out what they have to nearby civilizations and see where they springboard from there while they're waiting for the happy day that they too can join the collective.

It's in their best interest to be butterfingers with their technology.

Didn't the Queen offer Borg transwarp technology in Unimatrix Zero in return for Janeway "staying out of their affairs." After the show re-introduced the Queen, she was pretty open about letting Voyager live because there was simply better things out there to assimilate. Everytime she appeared she made a point to Seven or Janeway about "letting Voyager" survive. I'm 100% sure the Borg could have just went and assimilate Voyager at any time they just didn't care enough. This is why I assume the Kazon and most Delta Quadrant species still existed; they were either too underdeveloped to bring the Borg closer to perfection or they were advanced enough to resist. Nothing more, nothing less. We saw what happened to Arturius (whatever) species....

Arturis species was arguably more developed than the Federation in terms of propulsion at least.
However, we have no evidence of that.
It's possible the QS drive was Arturis own invention from after the time his species was assimilated.

Point is that regardless of the 'resistance', it's possible the Borg just bid their time (because to them the concept isn't the same like to other species) until they can adapt.
