SciFi & Fantasy Av Contest: Greedy Bastards

Because an avatar is that thing below your username, 140X140 pixels, not just a random picture.

I'm still not quite seeing the issue, though... unless you're saying that none of the entries are avatars, but rather just avatar-sized random pictures.

They're both. It's an Avatar Contest. The point is to make an avatar-sized picture utilizing the theme.

You could certainly make an Anya avatar, but right now it's just an Anya picture.

Bam! Anya Avatar:

Hmmm... So, for it to be a proper avatar, it should be as much of a "close-up" as possible? Is that the consensus? I don't often partake in avatar contests, so I'm not entirely sure. Generally, yeah, I would try to use a close-up of a person, but in this case, I wanted the picture to include her holding the money because... well, she's greedy. ;)

(Sorry for digressing. I'm not trying to be nitpicky, honest, I'm just genuinely curious as to why some might not see my entry as an actual avatar. I wanna make sure I'm doing this right, after all. :D)

Well, because the point is to make an avatar (the thing underneath people's usernames) for use on the site. "Avatar" has a very specific definition in the context of this message board. Otherwise this would just be a "post a picture of a greedy person" contest, rather than an avatar contest.

It certainly doesn't have to be a close-up. My current avatar is from "Chuck," and it's not really a close-up at all. I just through that Anya avatar together very quickly. Here, another quick and dirty one that includes the money...

There is no right or wrong. There is good and bad quality when it comes to what you're trying to convey though. Since an avatar is tiny, you don't want a crowded picture where the details all blend together and it's difficult to see everything clearly. I've seen a lot of people simply use DVD covers for avatar contests, which seems to be missing the point but they were allowed nonetheless.

Valid points all around. Ah well... I never claimed I was very good at creating avatars anyway. :p

Maybe I'll make up a new one later, though...

Daneel, I think your original entry is certainly legitimate enough for the contest -- it conforms to the guidelines and you clearly put some thought into it. I'd say it fits the definition of an "avatar" -- at least for the purposes of what we're doing here. This is supposed to be fun, so as long as you're having fun doing it, make what you want to make.

But if you're interested in designing avatars that really convey your ideas to the best of your ability, RoJoHen and Aragorn have some good advice. Thinking about things like framing (do you want a face close up? front-and-center? off to the side?), color, sharpness, borders, captions and the like can not only be a lot of fun to consider, but can also create some images that are quite enjoyable to look at.

I wouldn't say I'm an "expert" at making avatars, but I've made hundreds of them in my day and love the attention to detail that it requires to pull off something I really like. Basically, it all boils down to how much time and energy you want to put into it. Like I said, it's suppose to be fun to do. So as long as you're enjoying it, make what you feel. :techman:

There's nothing remotely wrong with Daneel's original entry whatsoever. I don't get the point.
It's no more random that the ones of Parker or Burke. Yeah if you don't want Buffy you might not know who it is or what she represents, but if you haven't seen Avatar or Aliens the exact same would be said of the other two

This happens every single contest. You don't need to wear the av, no one hardly ever does. And you don't some crappy text explaining "Anya loves money" for christ sakes.
Some people are just being dicks is all I can see

The "rules" for the av contests is that entries have to conform to the rules for avs you wear on this site.

140x140 pixels and no larger than 70kb file size. Your original post of the picture was neither. That's why it's not considered an avatar.

It doesn't have to be 140x140 exactly. No larger than, but it can be smaller either horizontal or vertical

A really fast way to re-size your avatar is to just upload it to this site as your actual avatar and then use the picture that appears.

Well, sure. I had no problem with the picture itself...it just wasn't an avatar. The idea of an Anya avatar certainly works for the contest, just not in that format.

^ How exactly are you defining "avatar"? Because by every practical notion I can think of, the original Anya picture was an avatar. Unless we're simply playing at semantics, I don't see the point of poo-pooing an image that is clearly within the guidelines of the contest.

Well, for the purposes of the contest, I'm pretty sure an "avatar" can be no larger than 140X140. That is the ONLY argument I have been trying to make!

The image I am seeing is 1024 X 575, and it's been that way since I first saw it.

SCREENCAP! (yep, I'm bored).

Is this not what other people are seeing?
