Sci Fi Tech becomes Reality Behold-Transparent TV Screen

A few years back, there was a tv show airing on Fox called ''Almost Human''. I remember complaining about this futuristic cop show's use of transparent holographic screens that hovered high above the character's desks. Obviously, you couldn't talk to your mistress, stream Netflix, or sneak some porn on these things.. :D Not to mention the 'see thru aspect' of such a monitor. Reading a news site would be a headache. Well, looks like reality has caught up with us. I stumbled across this today, and...well...egads! :rolleyes:
While not holographic, some tech giant has come up with a transparent monitor to strain ours eyes on.

For home use, I can't really see this as desirable. Perhaps in showrooms, malls, or other special events/presentations...
 
I can see some great limited uses for this, but I predict it won't catch on in a big way. Remember when they tried to make curved TVs a thing? ;)
 
Curved screens are still being sold - at least by Samsung.

There are a surprising number of curved monitors - including some stupid wide-screen versions (at equally stupid prices, of course).
 
I'm not sure I'd want something like that. The contrast level would likely be low and hard on the eyes, given that now our eyes wouldn't just be trying to focus on a solid image, but would have to have to focus on the image amid the background, which could potentially be busy depending on what it is and where it is.
 
Don't mind a clear pane when off, but if its on I want Completely Opaque! all these transparent screens, holograms, would just irritate me.

Yeah, there's that. That's one reason why I don't think this will ever realistically take off. I guess one way they could make this work better is if they could have a back layer that automatically adjusts for contrast.
 
Well there is window technology that will frost the window with I guess electricity with a flip of the switch, so maybe it could be layered where the "back" is turned on and frosted white or black to help opacity??
 
James Cameron is supposedly going to use a version of 3D stereoscopy with the next Avatar movies that won't requires glasses to be worn. Not sure what technology is involved there or whether it will be easily downscalable to home use.
