Sci-FI Lit Recommendations

I'm in the mood to read something sci-fi, but outside of Star Trek and a couple of other books, my sci-fi lit knowledge is less than great. I've read some stuff on io9 and on amazon but can't really find what I'm looking for and was hoping you knowledgeable folks would be able to help.

I would love to read something Star Trek-like, about space and exploration and with great characters but will settle for something that's just really, really well written.

To help out, some of my favorite sci-fi books are:
World War Z
Zone One (I would love to read a book that combines space exploration and galactic politics and literature as well as Zone One combined zombies and the apocalypse and literature)
Oryx and Crake
Star Trek Vanguard series
DS9 Relaunch series

Thanks so much for all the help!

Check out Stephen R. Donaldon's Gap Cycle, it's among the best space opera out there and you might like it as a DS9 and Vanguard fan.

I would highly recommend the Honor Harrington series by David Weber. It's a heck of a good military SF series. It's published by BAEN and some of the series eBooks are free and others are reasonably priced.
