Sci fi - fantasy or space movies that made you cry.

TWOK, when Spock dies

Deep Impact (came out at the same time as Armageddon) - just the nobility of those willing to die to save the Earth, and Robert Duvall is such a fine actor

LotR:FotR - at the Battle of Helm’s Deep; again the nobility of those willing to sacrifice

The Lion King - when Mufasa dies -- how could one NOT cry?
(I consider this a fantasy since, well, it’s Disney animation and animals don’t usually sing and dance)

Speaking of animation, nothing is sadder than that sequence in "Allegro Non Troppo" where a scrawny cat wanders through the ruins of his once happy home, which appears to have been destroyed by World War III, while remembering his former life as a beloved family pet. The contrast between the warm, happy flashbacks and his current bleak existence is just heart-breaking . . . especially if you're a pet lover.

Oh, didn't think of animated movies. Which brings instantly to mind the opening sequence of Up. I couldn't be bothered to finish watching the rest of the movie, with the balloons on the house (quit when they were trying to land on The Lost World set or whatever it was.) The opening encapsulated a whole marriage and life and how it ends. That's a real weeper.

E.T If you dont shed aleast one tear, you have a black and cold heart.

Present and accounted for. Honestly, while there are some movies that will make me sad, it's hard to think of one that will actually make me cry. At lot of the moments listed here, I didn't think much of. E.T. was sad, but not that sad. King Kong was way too overstretched. Wrath of Khan, I just had insufficient investment in the characters, since TOS was before my time. And the only thing I felt at the beginning of Abrams' Product was anger at being so cheaply manipulated.

From looking at what people have reported, films that did make me cry were the ending of Pan's Labyrinth (brutal and unexpected), and the end(s) of Return of the King. Jackson does a far better job linking the audience emotionally to the characters than Tolkien himself, and in a way I suppose I was sad that this amazing cinematic experience was over.

Oh, and The Little Mermaid, as a child. What can I say? Octopus Lady scared the shit out of me.

If you don't intend to ever finish it, there another sad/happy bit at the end related to that:
He opens up the old adventure book that spurred him on his journey, only to find that his wife had filled it up with pictures from their life together, and written at the end "Thanks for the adventure."
While it didn't get me crying, it was definately affecting. Honestly, Pixar's films are some of the most emotionally genuine out there.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

The closest thing I can think of is Scrooged. I cried when Bill Murray was making his Christmas speech on live TV.

TWOK made me cry. Armageddon might have, if not it was close but I can't quite remember. King Kong was close too. Other than that, I usually just cry at stupid sappy animal movies. Although Sci Fi series do it to me sometimes, for example:

The scene in Prayer when Scorpius makes Crichton kill Chiana.

and

Daniel Jackson's (first) death scene and later, Carson Beckett's funeral.

No, I never would have known about this otherwise. Thanks for the information.

Transformers the Movie. when Optimus Prime dies. not only did he die, but all the color faded away. broke my little kid heart.

Ah yes, the Abyss. I don't often cry in movies(The only thing LOTR induced in me was sleep and while I enjoyed E.T. as a kid it I never brought a tear to my eye) but that scene was pretty heart wrenching. The Abyss is a great movie though all around, one of my top 10 scifi flicks.

I completely agree about The Abyss, it is an under appreciated movie. I too well up everytime at that point.

The only one I can think of where I cried was TWOK, Iron Giant and ET choke me up, but I think TWOK had more of an impact because I had "known" Spock for most of my life. Honorable mention to Futurama episode Jurassic Bark

And, yeah, the opening scenes of the new STAR TREK, when George Kirk sacrifices himself.

I could not believe that I was crying 5 minutes into a Star Trek movie!

lol ;) Me either.

LOTR : when Gandalf "dies".
ST : TWOK
end of the Iron Giant
LOTR : ROTK : very end scenes
The bookend scenes in "UP"
The very end of Toy Story 3 was ridiculous. (I have a daughter whose a couple years way from going to college)

A lot of these I didn't cry per se, but I was close. TWoK and Iron Giant get me every damn time though, no matter how many times I've seen them.

I get choked up at weird things that aren't even happy or sad sometimes, like the first time I saw Yoda go all Tasmanian Devil for some reason. That was like an awesome tearing up, I guess.

- The Wrath of Khan - Spock's sacrifice and death
- The Search for Spock - Stealing the Enterprise and music
- Star Trek - George Kirk's sacrifice/Jim's birth/the music (perfect scene)
- The Iron Giant - The Giant's sacrifice
- The Fellowship of the Ring - Gandalf's "death"
- The Two Towers - Eomer and Gandalf's charge
- The Return of the King - Lighting the beacons, the ride of the Rohirrim, Sam carries Frodo, the charge at the Black Gate, Frodo's departure and Sam's reaction
- E.T. - E.T.'s death and departure
- Mighty Joe Young - Joe looking like he was going to die
- King Kong - Kong dying
- The Fountain - Izzy's death
- The Abyss - Reviving Lindsey
- Gattaca - The departure, Jude Law's death, the music
- The Truman Show - Truman exits the dome
- The Green Mile - Michael Clarke Duncan's execution
- Deep Impact - Crew's sacrifice, kid's having to leave Yar and husband behind
- Armageddon - Harry's death
- Up - Marriage sequence (one of the most heartbreaking scenes ever)
- Bicentennial Man - Andrew's and his wife's death (I love this movie; it's too bad the critics hate it)
- Blade Runner - Roy Batty's death
- Attack of the Clones - Yoda vs Dooku
- Revenge of the Sith - Anakin vs Obi-Wan/Yoda vs Palpatine (especially when the platform rises), Obi-Wan saying "You were the chosen one"
- Terminator 2 - Terminator gets lowered into the molten steel
- Terminator 3 - Skynet launches the nukes
- Aliens - Newt calls Ripley "mommy" and they hug

Yeah, I'm a big softie.

MASSIVE SPOILERS, duh.

Silent Running - the ending, obviously. More for the droids than the guy, tbh
Deep Impact - Tea Leoni/her dad on the beach
First Contact - but only the very first time I watched it, when the Vulcans land and reveal themselves
When Worlds Collide (I think, it's been years since I've seen it) - when the scientist guy in the wheelchair gives up his place on the escape ship
that movie with Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins - when Hopkins knows it's time to die at the end and leaves happy

Almost but not quite:
Independence Day - not to the point of crying, but a bit "emotional" when whatshisname flies in to sacrifice himself.
The Truman Show - as with ID4, not crying, but a bit emotional when Truman finally leaves.

Deep Impact - Tea Leoni/her dad on the beach

See, that part made me cheer. Leoni's voice is so annoying and monotone I was living vicariously through the wave.

Plus, I get a kick out of that guy sitting on the bench reading his newspaper as the wave approaches Manhattan. What was that guy's deal? Did he not read the headline that said "Giant Comet Obliterates Mankind Today!" He's just kicking back, reading the latest stock reports or Garfield strip, not a care in the world until he gets pancaked by a thousand foot wave that somehow snuck up behind him. Cracks me up every time.

I'd forgotten that. Ah well, might as well maintain normal life if you can't do anything about the impending apocalypse. :D
