? Says She Isn't Going to Be the Doctor's New Assistant

Michelle Ryan has apparently said she won't be joining Doctor Who full-time.

The former Bionic Woman plays the Timelord's sidekick in the Easter special of the sci-fi show, but said she won't be the Doc's next companion, reports The Sun.

She said: "Please don't put your bets on me being the next assistant. You would be wasting your time."

"Doctor Who is amazing but I think people presume, 'Why wouldn't I want to do it as a regular thing?' I'm a commitment-phobe," the 24-year-old continued.

Michelle - who found fame as Zoe in EastEnders - said she saw her character Lady Christina as "someone who is around for this one-time adventure".

I never knew she was a commitment-phobe. Maybe this is a new thing since her let down on Bionic Woman.

You wouldn't think a commitment-phobe would sign up for a potentially multi-season run (had it been successful) of 24 hour-long episodes seasons.

Then again, it seems to take the UK longer to make 13 episodes of Doctor Who than it does for the US to make 22-24 episodes so maybe it is a bigger commitment.

maybe not a commitment-phobe, but she might not be willing to commit to a full series of Doctor Who, should something better (or in the US) comes along.

Well, what we did see of Bionic Woman wasnt her best. The American accent attempt didnt help either, even though she did it quite well.

Ive seen her act in Eastenders among other things and thought she was good. Maybe this is the part where she excells and gets more job offers.

I'd like to see her as a companion, a more mature, not quite mature as Donna but still an older 'free spirited' type companion maybe.

But hey, if she dont wanna do, she dont wanna do it. Unless she is tempted by other means such as a few more zeros.

Reports and internet rumours abound that Ryan, after supposedly auditioning for the role of Martha Jones, which went to Freema Agyeman, is now lined up to play the new Doctor’s new assistant when Matt Smith inherits the Tardis in 2010.

“That’s completely untrue,” she laughs. “I have never auditioned for the role of the Doctor’s assistant in the past. And I’m not in talks about becoming the new assistant. I’m just enjoying the freedom I have to play a variety of roles. Playing Christina is perfect: she’s a special guest who could return. At the moment, when it comes to acting, I’m a bit of a commitment-phobe.”

I also saw a YouTube video yesterday where, IIRC, Michelle said she wanted to "keep her options open" regarding the role. Who knows what is true nowadays? You can't trust any media report!

I agree, but to me its meaningless, like "It would depend on the script" something they say alot in hollywood.

Put yourself in her position:

  1. Reporter asks if she has intentions playing the Doctor's Companion and she says "No". They make her an offer which she likes, but is reviled by reporters and rabid fanboys who crucify her as being either money hungry or a liar.
  2. Same as above except she says she would play the Companion. However, a different offer comes up that doesn't pan out. Again, roundly criticized and this time it was for stringing people along and having no intention of following through.
  3. "Depends on the script" is the only way an actor is able to maintain a neutral position and keep his options open. Harrison Ford, for example, made it clear that he was unsure about returning for either Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi. He had to keep his options open, because committing to a deal could result in a stinker that will sink someone's career.

Just my thoughts.

I think if I was Michelle I would go with "They have not asked me back, if & when they ask me, ill consider what is best for me at that time" or the "I don't comment on rumour & speculation"

I'm kinda torn. She was very good and I would like to see her come back.

However...

Firstly, if she did come back it would be as Smith's companion, and though she had nice chemistry with Tennant it doesn't follow that she would have with 11.

Secondly, to be honest I'm kinda hacked off at everyone the Doctor encountered coming back eventually! Ok I know not everyone does, but it happens a touch too often (and yes I am a hypocrite because I'd love to see Sally Sparrow again some day...)

Sally Sparrow :adore::adore:

I would not object to her return with the 11th Doctor, like ive said she is alot like Jenny and I want Jenny to return, could I dare to dream, of 11, Jenny & Christina in the TARDIS?

well yes that would be your "dream" dream, not a Doctor Who dream, which is a subtle difference.

still I have nothing against the "dream" dreams, infact I fear that any dream I have involving Jenny & Christiana may not be PG, and suitable for a 7pm TV audience.

Mmmm.

Rose, Lynda-With-A-Y, Reinette, Martha, Sally, Jenny, and Christina.

In the TARDIS.

With me.

That's what I call a good day's time travel. :bolian:
