Which 3 Trek series' do you save?

To me TAS isn’t even worth discussing.

I agree, but I mean, I can at least watch some episodes of TAS and get a good laugh at it, especially the animation, or think that some of the alien designs are pretty creative (as evidenced by them appearing in LD)

And even with the other Treks I don't like, even ENT, I can enjoy some episodes.

But none of them inspires that active dislike I feel for PIC (no, not even franchise killer ENT). PIC is really a show I'm just downright unable to watch.

For the second time, my not voting for PIC has nothing to do with the quality. The thread was "which three series would you preserve?" not "which three series are your favorite?" Not the same thing. They can be, but they're not.

PIC is too dependent on the fact that it's a follow-up to TNG. I also based my choices on representation. I chose TOS because that's where the franchise started. I chose TNG because that's where the franchise picked up again on TV and, by the end, you get a feel for what DS9 and VOY would be like. I chose DSC because you get a sampling of SNW, it's serialized Trek (which TOS and TNG aren't), and it's also when the franchise started up on TV for a third time. Between TOS, TNG, and DSC, you get Roddenberry, Berman, and Kurtzman.

PIC is extra. There's nothing I mentioned above that isn't already covered by the series I listed above.

TBF my dislike of PIC doesn't necessarily have to do with its quality either. And I was not trying to imply that it is a hated show because of the number of votes (just that I personally dislike it)
Though I do remember some poll in these Forums about New Trek where PIC did fall behind the other series (at least the ones aimed at adults, not sure about prodigy)
And I was pointing out that I think TAS got more votes because it's connected to TOS, not because it has higher quality.

PIC is a direct sequel to TNG, and wouldn't make much sense without knowledge of it's parent show. I think that's playing a bigger part than some want to believe.

Do you need VOY to understand Seven in PIC?

What about TNG to understand Worf and O'Brien in DS9?

What about DIS to understand Pike, Una and Spock in SNW?

Or TOS to understand every TOS appearance in every spinoff in franchise history?

At PIC’s core, its about a retiree going on adventures with a bunch of outcasts. But no one is going to like a show that is badly written or was just not edited enough to create a tighter, more coherent story.

The fact is, its a show with a lot of good elements and concepts that should be expanded on, but doesn't.

I don't think you necessarily have to be a fan of TNG, or be knowledgable about it to like PIC. Like, the viewer is not really required to know about Troi and Riker's past with Picard first-hand, their episode manages to convey the idea that those three are old friends by itself.
And I doubt that PIC's audience consists solely of people who have seen all of TNG.
I also thought the writing quality in season 1 was pretty good (though I haven't seen season 2, which sounds worse, from what I heard), but the overall product is just to my heavy, personal dislike.

Anyone else out there who think it's actually better that TOS and TNG are not serialized?
This is an opinion, don't get mad but I like stand alone episodes better.
Although, there are things that they go back to in TNG like the trial of humanity (from first to last episode), Worf is dealing with the Klingon empire and family honour, Data's quest to be more human and his rights, Picard and the Borg, Picard, Beverly, Jack and Wesley thingy and obviously the succesful dating of LaForge.
There are some plotlines occasionally connecting here and there but every episode doesn't revolve around them.

Most of what I've watched since the early-2000s has been serialized. Episodic TV is the oddball for me, not the other way around.
Now I'm really curious what a newbie fan of Discovery would think, jumping into Picard without any prior knowledge of TNG.
I felt the need to do a complete re-watch of TNG and some of VOY before going into PIC. If I hadn't, certain things would've been lost on me.

I never felt the need to re-watch anything before going into DSC or SNW. They explain what you need to know 99% of the time. There was one time where I thought they got too into the weeds when DSC referenced the TOS Defiant and the events from ENT during the Mirror Universe Arc, but that was the exception. The rest of the time, if you have a basic knowledge of Star Trek, you can get by.

TNG
DS9
ENT

Can’t believe the piece of shit that is Discovery has more votes than Enterprise.

I am flabbergasted that ds9 so far is the most saved show. I mean yeah, I get that many people if not most feel it is underrated, but without TOS it wouldn't even exist. My personal feeling is that a war centered dystopian ripoff of Babylon 5 has no place in the Star Trek canon, and I refuse to watch for those reasons specifically (besides the fact it's just so damn depressing) but while I can respect others opinions I am more than shocked that most people would prefer to save it above TNG or even TOS. I guess I should be glad we aren't actually eliminating any series, because if DS9 was the most saved series I wouldn't even be a Trekkie.

So do you like Deep Space 9 or not?

Man, has it even been half an hour since I posted that? And already you guys are chasing me around with tomatoes and eggs.

I'm actually having a very interesting debate on my facebook with two close friends over whether or not DS9 deserves the massive amount of praise it is getting. They are trying to convert me to appreciate the show, and I do appreciate that it has it's fans, I'm just not sure why it is somehow the most beloved, as I have always seen DS9 as the exception to the rule, not the rule itself.

Just a reminder, there are no wrong answers here. This is what a given individual likes, and it is expected to vary.

If I were picking my favorite shows...

  2. The Next Generation
  3. Strange New Worlds

  8. Voyager
  9. Picard
  10. Discovery
  11. The Animated Series
