Sarah Jane Adventures: Series 4

Since I couldn't find a review/spoiler thread, and since the series starts up today in the UK, I thought I'd open a thread.

Today was The Nightmare Man episode 1. Anyone see it? What did you think?

Just a few random thoughts because its late.

Glad they got the obligatory 'everyone gets slimed' out of the way early.

I tend to go for the more emotional/character development stories a lot more than the standard 'monster of the week' ones, so I though it was great! Some really great scenes here. Lukes nervousness and fear were well handled, and the scene in Sarah's old car was particularly touching.

The goodbye party was a nice touch. It always annoyed me that the three leads didn't seem to have any school related activities or friends. Apparently there are quite a few.

The Nightmare Man was well done, and very creepy. When I first heard his laugh I was afraid they were going for a Joker clone.

And dear lord, Rani's looking hotter than ever!

I definately think we're off to a promising start. But lord, those vulture creatures in the opening still look like muppets.

I haven't watched this show since the beginning so I'm not the most familiar with it but I was a bit surprised that they killed that Slitheen like that. I know he's an evil bastard but I was suprised in a kids show that they'd just kill an unarmed thing like that. I guess it's all for the slime gag and you're not supposed to read much into it.

This show is hard for me to get into it because it just never seems to have that "magic" quality that Who has at its best. I've tried a few times but I just have never been sold on it. Of course, I may have to tune in to see the Doctor and Jo later on.

Wonderful episode. The episode has the right balance of creepiness and farewell to Luke's impending departure, but my one caveat is that I wish K-9 had been part of the dream mocking (beyond his cold factual statements in the first dream). After all, he's perfectly capable of mocking Mr. Smith at any give chance.

You're telling me! When she was dancing, I was feeling very guilty.

Wow, I'm surprised to read this because I often think this show captures the spirit of the classic Who series more than the current Who series.

Good opening gag - and hopefully that's the last we'll see of the bloody Slitheen this year. Good buildup of the character-led plot, and the cast are as great as always.

The Nightmare Man himself is well done, with Julian Bleach completing the set (having previously appeared as in Torchwood and Dr Who). I still can't believe how much his voice sounds like Michael Wisher.

On the downside, it's hard to see what threat the Nightmare Man actually offers - he's not exactly Freddy Krueger (though Bleach in that role would have made for a good remake!).

Still I enjoyed it.

On a side-note, they're *still* showing 8 year-old episodes of Tracy Beaker before it? Have CBBC no new shows? And the animated version of the logo, dancing around every few seconds, is even more annoying than a static one.

And someone needs to tell the presenter on CBBC who claims to "be tight" with Sladen, that she'd fucking smack him one for calling her Lizzie...

Shocked the hell out of me while reading GB when I realized the actor playing the Nightmare Man was also Davros! I hadn't been paying attention.

I guess its because Luke doesn't really feel any emotional attachment to him.

Its those short school uniform skirts that get me.

Funny, I feel that way about Torchwood. :)

I've never had a problem with SJA though. Though being a Sarah fan from way back probably helps a lot.

I loved the bit with Sarah nearly burning down the kitchen though (how the hell has she managed to feed herself all these years?). I love Sarah Jane, but she does tend to come off as Miss Perfect too often on the show.

Saw part two - not bad at all, though it had a fairly predictable ending. The Nightmare Man himself came off as surprisingly impotent, though I was entertained enough watching the kids (not really kids anymore, eh?) deal with their own nightmares, however briefly.

So Luke is off to Oxford, but will be back. I'm not convinced it's like a huge change trhough - according to my map, it's not REALLY that far away, is it? Couldn't he be back on Bannerman Road by train in a couple hours or something, if they really needed him? I understand that it's really the symbolic step of Luke reaching adulthood and striking out on his own, but he's hardly out-of-reach like Maria is.

Likewise, K9 is off the show again too. But we ARE getting a replacement for Luke at some point, no?

Does anybody know if this season is going to air on BBC HD? I'd like to A) actually see it at 1080, and B) see it without the unbelievably large and distracting animated CBBC D.O.G. I searched for HD broadcast info, but could find nothing.

Yep, that was good. Still not sure what threat he offered to the world (the threat he offered to our regular family of characters was obvious, of course, and chilling enough, but why demean that effective threat with some "tomorrow the world" element?)

The resolution was somewhat obvious, but Julian Bleach held it all together. (If he was in his Torchwood-style calm mode, he'd make a good replacement for Heath Ledger in any Batman 3 Joker cameo)

Amused by the music as well, which managed to almost but not quite be Beautiful Dreamer...

Overall, a good start to the season. 8/10

Overall, an enjoyable serial. I loved Clyde's and Rani's nightmares, especially the crazy old Sarah Jane in a wheel chair. I could Lis Sladen relish that particular role.

I liked it and was sad to see Luke and K9 go (are they coming back at all even just for the season finale or is that it?)

Part 1 did seem like a bit of filler really in many ways, though part 2 was lots of fun. What was the deal with the sentient concrete... did Sarah Just happen to have that?

She has a lot of stuff just laying about the house.

I think I was more sad to see K-9 go. I'm going to miss the little metal dog. Though Lukes going to have a hell of a time explaining him.

I do wish the writers would have thrown us just a little bone and have them going to Cambridge. Theres still should be an eccentric old Professor there whos lived at the school for as long as anyone remembers, who knows K9.

Right the episode 1 review.

I thought it was a bit slow, and really highlighted that Tommy Knight is not a strong actor. Another reason why its probaly a good thing Luke is leaving. the nightmares lack subtley, but maybe that is because of how clever Luke is.

Talking of highlighting things that dont work, and I noticed this in a repeat of "The Gift" I watched the other day, Rani just does now suit the school uniform, if they are in 6th form now (which I think they are) could they not have ditched them?

The Siltheen was a VERY bright green, but I guess now we know Siltheen come in differnt colours, that is to be expected now, but really have become a one scene joke for the show.

The Nightmare man, will be interesting to see where he came from, the next time on suggests space, but what if he is every dream & nightmare Luke never had, made flesh.
