Spoilers Santiago Cabrera as Captain Cristóbal "Chris" Rios

With this season 2 ending they destroyed every possibility that Starfleet Captain Rios can have his own spin-off series, or cameo in some future Trek. And that is mistake. He had "Starfleet officer" charisma like Anson Mount

Hopefully he had a project he wanted to do. But I would be 100% okay with Rios being a co-star on Seven's Rangers as her holographic Number One.

Sounds like weeping angels from dr who are in trek. Only difference is they give their victims hot lovers as consolation

Does anyone know if Santiago Cabrera wanted to get out of Picard somehow?

Rios fate in the past is not very satisfying for me.

Getting killed in an altercation is one thing, being killed prematurely is another. This story is a little bit disappointing for me. I'll miss more Rios adventures. They killed every chance of him showing up in future novels.

Spoilers ahead...

I'm so frustrated by the ending we got for Rios.

Rios, his holograms, his friendship with Raffi, his relationship with Juratti, him moving on from the Ibn Majid, and Rios going back to Starfleet all had so much potential at the end of season 1 but then was completely wasted in season 2. Now they can't even rectify any of that as nearly everything in season 3 is being discarded in favor of a TNG reboot. It feels like his whole character was created just to provide a ship and information about the synths in season 1 and then they had no idea what to do with him after that so we got the stupid romance plot line in season 2.

Not only does it look like Rios isn't coming back but worst of all they didn't even leave the door open for a future cameo or the Stargazer/La Sirena spinoff that so many people have been mentioning. Rios' novel, Rogue Elements, showed part of what could have been and it was so so good but now it's unlikely he'll even make a cameo in beta canon ever again.

There are so many unanswered questions left too. Why were Guinan and Picard laughing that Rios dies in a bar fight? Who has a bar fight over medical supplies? Why does Guinan even know this and have a photo if that happened in a different timeline? Are we really supposed to believe he is happy to devote his whole life to a relationship after 3 days when his last relationship ended badly after only 7 months?

Prime Georgiou and Lorca also showed a lot of potential but were killed off in favor of keeping worse characters. Having the same thing happen to Rios too now has really turned me off of new Trek.

Dude is in high demand. I doubt he wanted to be locked down, especially with COVID causing last minute changes.

I don't feel like celebrating. On the other hand, I'm looking forward to the German translation of Rogue Elements. One month to go until it'll be published. About 575 pages of Rios. I hope I can take this book with me on my vacation. On Risa. Nope, Austria.

I'm not celebrating.

I'm grateful. The actor clearly has a lot on his plate and that he gave a moment of his time to Star Trek is much appreciated, at least to me. He wasn't my favorite by a long shot but he gave it his all.

It's worth the wait. It expands his character and the adventure is fun too. I normally don't like the beta canon much but this was a fun read.

Isn't there the hologram Rios or Emmett or Constable or whatever he was called but I don't remember? :sigh:

Why were Guinan and Picard laughing that Rios dies in a bar fight?

For the same reasons Picard was comfortable letting Rios stay in the 21st and potentially ruin the timeline they fought to preserve all season long – they don’t care.

Who has a bar fight over medical supplies?

Presumably, anyone who was living in and trying to survive the post-atomic horror.

Why does Guinan even know this and have a photo if that happened in a different timeline?

She still lived on Earth from 2024 up to the post atomic horror. Which means she lived through the Bell Riots, WW3, and the genocidal campaign of Philip Green. None of which Picard bothered to warn young Guinan about.

Are we really supposed to believe he is happy to devote his whole life to a relationship after 3 days when his last relationship ended badly after only 7 months?

Its very implausible. We are supposed to believe that Teresa and Ricardo won’t freak out about WW3 once Rios tells them? If the PIC writers wanted to write Desperate Housewives in space with Rios and Teresa, they should have been upfront about it.

Apathy. Who cares?

Ok, so what about Edith Keeler? Kirk falls in love, and has to let her die? Is that equally implausible?

I always thought so but perhaps not. Perhaps Rios knows the risk, and instead of warning them, he faces the danger with them. Sounds like a leader.

After reading a lot of different opinions on season 2, here is what I’ve cobbled together:

1. Rios is suffering from a concussion and makes bad decisions because of this. He leaves butterflies everywhere, forgets that he is the captain of the Stargazer in his last scene, and completely abandons his Starfleet crew despite being very loyal previously. I suspect Teresa was more interested in Rios' future tech than Rios himself and might have kept quiet about the concussion because of this. The box of butterfly tech was left at the chateau and Tallin's room remains so I guess she got what she wanted.

In season 1 Rios was shown to be enamored with the past, such as having a record player, reading paper books, and his cigars. Unfortunately, these are becoming less common in 2024. Despite becoming increasingly more processed, Rios also likes 2024's food but this is understandable considering his ship's replicators have caused people to puke, have stomach pains, and made food he though looked disgusting. There's also the issue of WWIII looming. Because he's not thinking straight, Rios doesn't consider that 2024 isn't the best time year for him to stay in.

2. Rios gambled and lost. Rios made Picard a father figure and then realised that he was not a son for Picard. I feel like when Rios told Picard he was staying, he wanted Picard to tell Rios to come back with them because Picard cares about him, but instead Picard only seemed interested in the timeline. Only Raffi seemed sad Rios was leaving them. Considering that Picard's arc was supposed to help him let people get close to him, it's not great that he didn't seem to care about Rios much at the end. Picard did help get Rios become captain of The Stargazer but that wasn't enough for Rios who wanted a more personal bond. Rios ultimately realised that he can't find a father for himself, but he can be the father he would have wanted for Ricardo.

There are rumours that season 3 will focus on a long lost son of Picard's. I hope he will finally be able to overcome his father/son issues.

3. Guinan wasn't telling the truth. Guinan was either describing a different timeline's Rios or she just made up what happened (which might explain the laughing). El-Aurians can sense timeline changes but they wont know specific details about what happened in another timeline. If you were a bartender, only knew that Rios served on a ship with an Arabic name and liked to drink, then you'd probably come up with an death story involving a Moroccan bar fight. Guinan also doesn't seem to understand how cigars work. Guinan admitted that she intentionally didn't tell Picard about Rios and so she still might have reasons for not telling the truth completely.

The picture looked to have been taken not long after Picard and the others left so my headcanon is that while they did start by founding La Mariposas, their ultimate fate is still open ended. Personally I like the theory that Rios was at the First Contact site watching Picard from afar, wishing he could beg Picard to take him back (Rios mentions Cochrane in season 1 foreshadowing this).

Ultimately, Rios is a tragic character in many ways and I don't think he actually gets a happy ending.

I hope for Rios that he doesn't die in the past prematurely in all existing timelines like.....

Janeway in the novelverse or Tallin

On the other hand: he could have suffered worse fates...
