Sandy Courage, RIP

Terrible news. And a bit strange. Also today, also 88, the death of Earle Hagen was announced. Mr. Hagen was also a well known TV theme composer, with his works including The Dukes of Hazzard, Eight Is Enough, The Dick Van Dyke Show and Gomer Pyle. His masterpiece, though, was the theme for The Andy Griffith Show. That's Mr. Hagen doing the whistling on the theme.

Somewhere tonight, Misters Hagen and Courage are writing a theme that would blow the universe apart.

Wow, I didn't realize he was of declining health. His music is a milestone, of course. He'll be greatly missed. :(

R.I.P.

RIP, Alexander Courage. You will be missed.

I just read also that the guy who whistled the theme from Andy Griffith also passed away.

Here's hoping the new film will open with....

Weee Wooo Dooo Daaaa

Bah Baa Daa Dee Dum Dee Daa Dum

Aaaahhh Aaaaahhh Aaaaahhh Aaaahhh Aaaahhhh Aaaaahhh

In tribute to the man who gave us that ditty in the first place.

* So long Mister Courage *

:( Ooh, that's sad news. Alexander Courage's music has set standards for all later Trek scores. I listen to his Cage soundtrack regularly. He will be remembered.

As an aside, Sandy is shorthand for Alexander? Didn't know that.

Hasn't been a good couple weeks for behind the scenes personnel, though 88 is a nice long run at life, and I can appreciate that and his music.

In tribute to the man who gave us that ditty in the first place.

Given that Michael Giacchino made good use of Lalo Schifrin's original themes in Abrams' Mission: Impossible III, I expect the same to be the case here.

As an aside, Sandy is shorthand for Alexander? Didn't know that.

It can be. Along with Alex, Lex, Xander, maybe even Al sometimes.

I'm a huge fan of his Naked Time score, perhaps one of the most complete, soup-to-nuts scores of the regular eps, and one that was quoted constantly throughout all 3 seasons.

I refer especially to the theme used so well in "This Side of Paradise" where Kirk enters the empty bridge, but there are other brilliant cues.

No beach to walk on....

Gawd I hope not! You are waaaay off key!

...but seriously, no other few musical notes bring such a strong reaction from me than those that open the theme. Other music brings reactions, often good to great, but none as strong or heartwarming to me. I heard the original series described as a good friend and companion. That is only a small part of what the theme automatically does to my mental outlook/mood/expectations.

Very sad news indeed. Yet another linchpin of the magic that was The Original Series. RIP.

All fine works, but surely his masterpiece was Harlem Nocturne.
