Do you think the starship construction scene in the trailer takes place in Iowa (as some have surmised, based on the location of the bar fight) or in San Francisco?

My bet is its in SF. I don't think Abrams and crew would make that big and pointless of a change. Also, Abrams said in his recent trailer overview that some of the young Kirk stuff took place in Iowa, and some in San Francisco. If not the construction scene, what else COULD have taken place in SF?

What kind of government would permit the construction of an anti-matter powered spacecraft within five hundred miles of a metropolitan center?

Let 'em fry a few cows. Barbeque, yum.

I doubt they'd fuel her up on Earth. But if so... its not like we haven't seen landed M/AM powered ships in and near population centers before. I'm sure power on Earth in generated in the same way that its generated on a starship.

That's the thing, though. We don't know if those scenes are immediately congruent with the shipyard scene, or if there was a lengthy travel time between them.

We know that Pike was at the bar the night of the fight and he talked to Kirk about fate and destiny and all that good stuff. I then remember reading (where, I totally forget...) that Kirk than goes to the recruiting shuttle and throws his keys to some kid and says to Pike, "I'll do it in three" (referring to the time that it will take him to graduate the academy). So this leads me to believe that it is being built in Iowa. Pike being there makes me think that he, Sulu, Uhura and whoever else was in that bar was in Iowa for some reason. I think the only Kirk scenes that take place in San Francisco are Academy scenes.

Originally, the Enterprise was built at the San Francisco shipyards (in orbit, I believe but I could be wrong). But San Francisco was where it was built in the original continuity.

I hate to be that guy, but I really don't care where it's being built. I just care that little Jimmy has packed enough clean underpants for the ride.

Abrams recently said the first few scenes of the trailer depict both Iowa and San Francisco.

Move on

Where's the who gives a fuck option?

I vote that that's it's built in Rhyl just to piss off both sets.

I'm sure power on Earth in generated in the same way that its generated on a starship.

Why would one want something as horrendously volatile as matter/anti-matter reactors for planetary utility power generation? Anyway, Gene Roddenberry made it perfectly clear in his ST:TMP novelization that solar power - collected through a heliocentric constellation of Peter Glaser's solar power satellites - is the primary energy source for 23rd century Earth.

Actually in "Friendship One" we learn that Earth has used MAMR generators since after the First Contact event for plantary power generation, even sending the schematics of the system and plans for building the generators to other species.

"Paradise Lost" in DS9 mentions a network of planetary generators presumed to be MAMR that would be the logical growth of the original network.

Lets not forget the novel also had the Federation mass delete all of its stored data everywhere for little or no reason to stop V'ger getting it as well as a dozen or more equally ridiculous things Roddenberry thought would be cool.

Russia.

Wait for the chekov quote that everything was discovered/invented in russia. The first of many history lessons, just to piss Kirk off.
