Sam Raimi to direct Robert Downey Jr in Wizard of Oz prequel

I've always been slightly interested in the Land of Oz, but never cared much for the character of Dorthy Gale or her getting home.

Hence my disinterest with The Wizard of Oz. (I guess I just never fell all over it like everyone else did.)

This might be better. (Or at least one can hope.)

I enjoyed Wicked quite a bit, so I think if we get more background on Oz and it's surrounding lands, I'd give it a look.

So where's the damn WICKED movie, then? I mean I keep hearing about it...seems like money in the bank.
It's still in development, although - like you said - there hasn't been any solid forward momentum yet. They're currently developing it as a movie musical based on the stage show (which was in turn of course based on the novel).

Nah, you need to get that marketing tie-in, get something the kids will want to buy it also needs to be modern hip.

Ruby Crocs.

Do they need slippers at all, ruby or silver, for a prequel? I guess they're iconic so maybe they'll try to slip 'em in there.

I think the famous ruby slippers are mentioned in Wicked, so it would seem they had more of a history before Dorothy wore them. Though if Ruby, they'd have to get permission from MGM since they own them. They weren't ruby in the original script, but someone had pointed out that they were filming in technicolor, and they wanted a color that could stand out.

I suppose it have to deal with the Ruby Slippers, let us know why they were so damn important.

If we're going to do a Wizard of Oz prequel I demand lens flares!

Well, if the Wicked Witch of the East shows up, which she really ought to if this is about the Wizard coming to Oz, then she would be wearing the ruby slippers/silver shoes.

There's one thing I'm unclear about and I'm reading Wicked at the moment, which seems to say the Wizard's already in power when Elphaba is growing up, unless there have been different wizards throughout time? The Chronology of events seem a bit different.

I was more excited about Warcraft.

You know, the world of Oz would make a great MMO. Different countries, politics and border countries. Different starting points depending on the race/species you choose, ie Munchinkland, Quadling Country, Vinkus, Gillikin.

There's no single chronology of Oz that binds these works together. The original books by L. Frank Baum are in public domain, so different writers are free to write stories set with the Oz universe - prequels, sequels, alternative spins, etc - as they wish.

Exactly. It's like all the multiple versions of Sherlock Holmes and Dracula out there. You can't expect them to all agree with each other . . . .

Different writers, different continuities.
