Salvaging "Sub Rosa"

I think it's quite a mixed-message episode in some ways. Or we could call it layered. Gates looks lovely, which kind of indicates good things are happening. I enjoy seeing a woman of a certain age being shown to have a love affair; it's got a lot of gothic campery in it. And yet, contrasting to all this is the abusvie relationship Bev has become victim to, that preys on her and has preyed on generations of her family, and separates her from her friends and her careers. It's an odd episode. I like it. I always have.

She was 45 when the show first aired. May I ask what it is you are trying to convey by saying "of a certain age"?

Otherwise, I'm totally onboard with your analysis.

Well, I'm 43 myself, and I like it that a woman of that age is shown enjoying sex and romance, since so much of tv and the media generally portrays those things as being mainly (exclusively?) enjoyed by younger women. I think it's nice that a woman out of her 20s and 30s is shown as being a sexual being. That's all. :)

Thanks and I agree.

Considering that the average age span of women is now over the 80 year mark in OECD nations, maybe it's finally about time that we all lift our game and come to terms with the fact that that women can and do have a sexual life way, way over the age of 35 - and it's not icky that they do.

"A certain age" always sets my teeth on edge - no backhand to you WillsBabe, as you've explained your position very well.

I see that this one of the Jonathan Frakes-directed episodes.

I looked it up to see if it were perhaps a Winrich Kolbe-directed episode, because he is good with horror, of which the episode has some.

Any "horror" script that can make me laugh out loud (Crusher's grandmother sitting up in the casket and shocking Data and Geordi to name just one scene) is obviously not a good script to begin with.

The only way to salvage it? Don't produce it in the first place!

I rather hate to admit it, but I almost liked "Sub Rosa".

With that embarrassing confession made, how would you have written it? From your perspective, what would you need to change in order to salvage the story and turn it into a great (or at least better) episode?

I'm in the minority here but as a BEVERLY CRUSHER fan...I loved that episode! :)
