saddest songs ever

Lucky Man - ELP

Estonia - Marillion
Out of this World - Marillion

All three give me chills.. Every single time...

REM - Everybody Hurts.

I know the overall message is supposed to be the opposite of being a sad song, but I don't think I've ever managed to listen to it all the way through yet... It just sets something off in me :shifty:

Not generally my music as a rule and clearly driven by the fact that they're both attached to two of my very favourite pieces of TV to air, but...

Breathe Me, by Sia - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=wVBiZdy6TpQ (Starts at about 40 seconds in - SPOILERS for the Season 5/Series Finale of Six Feet Under)

Possession, by Sarah McLachlan - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=uscONDgMejY&feature=related(couldn't find the Due South footage, Victoria's Secret episode, it was attached to and oddly the only video I could find with the full Piano version was a fan-made compliation of BONES!!!!)

Two oddly affecting songs for me

Hugo - generally steers very clear of sad music as a rule

REM - Everybody Hurts.

I know the overall message is supposed to be the opposite of being a sad song, but I don't think I've ever managed to listen to it all the way through yet... It just sets something off in me :shifty:

I was thinking of this song too. When I hear it I just want to cry.:(

Fields of Gold. Particularly the Eva Cassidy version. I can barely listen to it. I find it incredibly moving. I've never had that reaction to music before.

I have to laugh at some of the incorrect song titles in this thread.

That said, it's interesting to see what other people find sad. For example, I'm a big Sarah McLanchlan fan, but I don't find "Angel" or "Possession" particularly moving. And I've definately never teared up over Radiohead.

My picks:
"The Scientist", Coldplay
"See the Sun", Dido
"Be Mine!" and "With Every Heartbeat", Robyn
"Like the Rose", BWitched (this doesn't even have sad lyrics, it just sounds sad.)
"Secret World", Peter Gabriel

My top 3... or songs I can think of at this moment:

1. All songs of Ashtorath, if you are easily depressed it might be better to stay away. :) I'm listening to this if I really need to slow down. an example can be found here on soundclick.
2. "Paradise" from Bruce Springsteen
3. Hurt from Johnny Cash, especially with the video clip attached.

If you need to recover from the above: then this might cheer you up, it's old school (1995) happy hardcore: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMihpjZ03_w :)

Well, I was tempted to say how sad I felt after listening to Nickelback or something, but I'll take it seriously (besides, I think sick or dead inside is more accurate than sad ;) ).

Probably pretty obvious, but Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division is a great song, but really sad at the same time.

Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt. Obvious, but still...

Yeah, coupled with the music video, it's really sad. Although the last lyrics have a little bit of hope that makes up for it.

Tears In Heaven

Lucky Man

Candle In the Wind(original version)

Not In Love- 10cc

Eleanor Rigby

Tallahatchie Bridge

and there's a Carly Simon tune with a line-
"I didn't cry,
When Granny died,
She me so upset-
And then I found I missed her
More than I'd ever have guessed." Don't remember the title but that one tears me up.

The other that gets me- Amazing Grace played on the bagpipes.

Woops- and Waterfall by TLC, particularly in conjunction with the video.
