Saavik/Spock dialog in TWOK.

Saavik: He's never what I expect, sir.
Spock:What surprises you, Lieutenant?
Saavik: He's so...HUMAN..
Spock: Nobody's perfect, Saavik

or something like that..

The Vulcan language is dubbed in by the actors in post, so what was the dialog as spoken when filmed??

I'd be surprised if it were substantially different from the subtitles. You can read the subtitles along to the dubbed Vulcan Language and not really miss a beat.

The dialog was the same, it was only decided after filming the scene to make it in the alien language. Which is why the language had to be so close to the English lines.

That was the beginning of Marc Okrand's association with Trek, IIRC. In addition to following the lip movements of Nimoy and Alley, he also tried to build on what James Doohan had devised of the Vulcan language for Spock's kolinahr scene in TMP (which also had to follow the actors' lip movements when the Vulcan dialogue was dubbed in post).

Yup, that's also where Nimoy met him to have him come back in TSFS to do the klingon language. Also expanded on from the initial work also done by Doohan for TMP.

I'm pretty sure the Vulcan dialogue in TWOK is slightly different from the subtitles, but not that much.

They overdubbed it in Vulcan, and changed the subtitles a little bit. I think Kirstie Alley's original line is "He's not what I expected" where as the subtitle is "He's never what I expect, sir"

This is exactly what I was hoping to find out. Does anyone know the dialog as spoken, before they dubbed in the Vulcan?

Just checked the tape:

Original lines
Saavik "He's not what I expected"

Spock "Well, nobodys perfect, Saavik"

Subtitles
Saavik "He's never what I expect, sir"
Spock "What suprises you, lieutenant?"
Saavik "He's so...human"
Spock "Nobody's perfect, Saavik"

Looks like they changed the tense of the first line and added Lieutenant at the end of the second. They also swopped very for so in the third line. I'm not 100 percent certain on the The final line, it looks like he says "Well, nobody's perfect Saavik". But he says it very quickly. His lips definately move before the word, and I can't see what else it could be.

^ Spock calls her "Saavikum" in the Vulcan language, in a teacher/student way, rather like the Japanese elder adds "son" to the end of a name as a term of endearment.

I'm not phonetically translating the Vulcan, I was just going for the english.

If I'm not mistaken this is how they did the Vulcan language scenes in TMP as well. Filmed it in English, dubbed Vulcan to the lip movements and then subtitled it with slightly different English dialog to mask what they'd done. Personally, I think it works pretty well.
