S4E03 - Brothers

Renvar

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
In the beginning of this episode, the Enterprise speeds to a medical facility to treat a 9 year old boy who ate a fruit containing a lethal parasite. It's somewhat unclear where exactly this boy ate the fruit. His brother claimed it happened "in the forest behind the east arcade." That suggests that it could have happened on a planet, but it also could have happened in an arboretum.

In either case, does it strike anyone as odd that a recreational facility for children was placed so close to plantlife that is potentially deadly if ingested? I know this problem was only really created to give a sense of life-or-death to Data's takeover of the ship. Still, it bugs me that such a thing could occur. If anything, the arcade is at fault for allowing the boy to be exposed to the Cove Palm in the first place.

As its a parisite it suggests to me its something you would not normally find in the fruit.
The Cove Palm could be one of the tastiest most popular and nutritional fruits in the Galaxy, unless you got the one with the parasite.

In the way that not every Elm tree has Dutch Elm disease,
or not every apple has a worm in it.

It could have been a random spore or insect that infected a usually perfectly safe plant.
