It looks like BBC America did "scary Doctor Who" stories all weekend, so I may have been reading too much into it.

I know they aired "Blink", which was the first episode with the Weeping Angels, and "Midnight", which is an ep where the Doctor is on a tourist bus that gets infiltrated by a creepy-as-hell entity. Both are Tennant episodes.

Ah, too bad! Thanks for checking.

"I had a mate who had one of these (TARDISes). I think his was a bit bigger, actually."
"What's the point of being alive if it's not to make others happy?"
Hmmm....if he wasn't confirmed as not going past this season, I'd say that's a very Doctor-ish thing to say...
I really, really hope not... Can't see him as the Doctor. I've also seen theories that he is "Romana", whoever that was.

He's not exactly been confirmed to be only in 1 series, covid might continue to throw a spanner in his comedy tour plans (which is what happened this time around, so he was available for filming this series).

My speculation - firing vortex energy into the Flux has a weird effect that, instead of being disintegrated by it, the TARDIS is flung onto a new time track that shouldn't be, but IS, as evidenced by Claire (and likely the Williamson tunnels). It SHOULD die, but didn't. However, the effects are delayed or even out of sync (hence why it was acting odd/bleeding/struggling throughout this ep). The Doctor has a chance to save everyone, but it means setting up certain events i.e. Claire, Karvanista's ship being early and Dan.

I did wonder about the TARDIS line - but then I thought about Claire meeting the Doctor and Yaz before they'd met her. It could be that Dan knows a bit more than he's letting on because he's seen the TARDIS - or another TARDIS - before.

Or it could just be his breezy, confident Scouse humour, taking weird stuff in his stride.

He's not Romana. Come on. Fans have been prophecying her return for 15 years...

I liked it. Gave it a 7...hard to gauge before the whole story finishes.

Sontarans are in it (Martha and Donna), Angels are in it (Amy and River), Cybermen are in it (Bill). It may be a stretch, but could the 60th anniversary, rather than all the Doctors coming back like in the 50th, involve all the companions coming back to help the Doctor save the universe?

I'm not sure we can count every villain/alien/monster appearance as a reference to companions who've encountered them.

Every time I think I've seen the lowest of the lows the right-wing press in the UK can sink to, they always seem to find a bit further to dig down.

You see, while you, I and everyone else with a functioning brain might have thought that Nadia Albina was cast as Dan's maybe-girlfriend Diane because she was the best person for the role, it was actually an insidious piece of left-wing propaganda.

Can you guess why?

No, but then I know nothing about her outside of this single episode.

I'd be lying if I said I was surprised. I honestly don't think there is a low that they can sink to that *would* surprise me.

Including by yours truly but making Dan turn out to be Romana would be a terrible and lazy idea.

Plus they've got to knock the fobwatched Timelord thing on the head. It was a wonderful twist with Jo Martin but it should be done now for a long, long time (Swarm's sister's situation does seem similar but does at least on the face of it appear to be enforced rather than a choice)

What struck me was that he was posing as a tour guide (Fugitive Doctor's job when she was "Ruth").

Personally, I'd rather see him as the Master, lol.

Perception filter haha

That's the beauty of it. If he were the next doctor his transition to spouting techno babble and epic speeches would be amazing

A deliberate nod to Ruth to imply there's more to Dan than meets the eye, or simple unoriginality on the part of Chibnall? Time will tell...but I'd be amazed if even Chibnall would try to get away with another fobwatched Doctor/Romana/Master.

One thing about the Liverpool museum scene that did vaguely surprise me was that Chibnall sidestepped Liverpool's darker history. A magnificent city but not far from the museum Dan was in is the maritime museum, whose entire top floor is devoted to slavery.

Just noticed this episode got an AI of 76. That ties it with Rose, The End of the Word and Love and Monsters as the episode with the worst AI of the modern era, even Orphan 55 got 77!

The BBC must have changed how it's calculated, I might not be the greatest fan of the Chibnall era but the highest AI any episode's got is 83 and there have been more sub 80 scores than all the other modern Doctors put together. (Nine had 1, Ten had 2, Eleven had 0, Twelve had 1 and Thirteen has, to date, had 8!)

And yes you can argue no one cares about the AI, but clearly the BBC do or they wouldn't collect it? As I say this isn't a stick to beat 13 with, because on what kind of fucked up planet are we on where The Haunting of Villa Diodati only gets an 80 when Fear Her gets 83?

I asked about this. Apparently the methodology hasn't changed.

It's probably not particularly helpful to compare scores 15 years apart. What would be more useful is comparing with other drama series that are on now, but the BBC doesn't generally release AI figures. We only get them because someone on the inside leaks the figure.

I don't think it's worth worrying about TBH. The old audience appreciation scores showed classic Who rarely got above a 60!

Yeah it definitely would be good to see what kind of AI scores things like Silent Witness or Call the Midwife gets, and I get that there might be a general downward swing. It's just interesting all the same.

Yes, as I said upthread the best since Spyfall, and context is important. I was discussing with someone on Twitter who was adamant that RTD's return would see a return to Tennant/Smith levels of viewing figures! Not going to happen, don't get me wrong I think RTD will up the numbers, but the days of the show routinely getting 7/8 million are behind us I think.

Yes, very unlikely. It's just not going to happen. Even Corrie hovers around 5m and EastEnders not even that.

It's not impossible the 60th anniversary special could get something like that, but I don't know if the series will regularly stay at those levels.

Fingers crossed though!
