Blurb:
Take it apart, figure it out, put it back together. That's the ongoing mission of the U.S.S. da Vinci, commanded by Captain David Gold and his first officer, Commander Sonya Gomez, late of the Starship Enterprise™ and one of Starfleet's top engineers. They oversee a crack S.C.E. team composed of specialists in such diverse fields as tactical systems, alien cultures, computers, linguistics, and cryptography. Together they're ready to cope with just about every kind of high-tech challenge imaginable -- and a few that nobody could have imagined.
For centuries, the planet Eerlik has had a thriving civilization, completely run, maintained, and administered by a giant sentient computer. But now that computer is breaking down and the desperate inhabitants are helpless to repair the damage. Only the crew of the U.S.S. da Vinci, accompanied by Geordi La Forge, can hope to fix the massive computer before the Eerlikkan society collapses entirely. Their mission grows more dangerous, however, when they discover evidence of sabotage -- and learn firsthand that hostile forces will do whatever it takes to stop Gold and his crew from saving the imperiled planet!

No old review, but I remember that I really liked the story and thought that it already showed a great strength of most of the S.C.E. run: the feeling of seeing a continuing story without having a real overshadowing story arc.

Trivia:
Cross Cult recently released a German translation with the following cover:

Re: S.C.E.: Fatal Error by Keith R.A. DeCandido Review Thread (Spoiler

This was the first of my Trek prose to be published. Not the first one I wrote -- that was Diplomatic Implausibility, which I wrote in late 1999/early 2000, but was published in 2001. But the schedule for this was insane. We went from concept to three finished stories in about a month and a half. :)

I read it years ago and dimly remember the story. The German cover is an improvement over the original, if I may say so. It involved sabotage of the Erlikkan mainframe by rogues from a colony within the same system, iirc.

I recently read this story I thought it was really good.:techman:

The only thing I remember about this one is that I enjoyed it, and that it really helped hook me on SCE/CoE. I voted Above Average.

I reviewed this one!

I remember really liking the character of Ganitriul, the planetary computer system. I kept expecting it to be all evil, enslaving the population and such. I was relieved when it turned out to be a dynamic character in its own right!

Here's my review from last year.

Yup, Ganitriul made this story. Very fun. I seem to recall that due to the antagonists, he had an amusingly less then total grasp on his security systems.

Re: S.C.E.: Fatal Error by Keith R.A. DeCandido Review Thread (Spoiler

So when will we see the rest of S.C.E. Books published in book form?

Re: S.C.E.: Fatal Error by Keith R.A. DeCandido Review Thread (Spoiler

The last one was published when there was a hole in the publishing schedule, so I don't see paper book readers getting another one until if/when that happens again.
At this point, if you want to read them it would probably be best to just buy the individual e-books.
