Ryan Reynolds Not Interested in Returning as Green Lantern Right Now

Re: Ryan Reynolds Not Interested in Returning as Green Lantern Right N

I have zero interest in a movie centered on any of the existing Green Lanterns other than Hal Jordan. OTOH, much as I liked Reynolds it's not a real challenging part to recast.

Other than Jordan, the most desirable option as far as I'm concerned would be for screenwriters to invent a new character tailored for the movie medium and the specific story they have in mind.

A new human Green Lantern was tapped recently.

Simon Baz.

Punk kid. 20-something.

Bored, decides to go for a joy ride.

Steals a van.

Starts driving.

Looks in the back... There's a massive bomb in the back and the digital clock is clearly counting down to zero quickly.

Rather than freaking, Simon finds an abandoned near by factory and clears the blast radius just in time saving thousands of people from death and permanent maiming.

So after Homeland security arrests him for terrorism... Becuase y'know how he's black and Muslim... Did I mention how he's black and Muslim? So it's like a really bad day for Simon.

This CIA creep is talking about waterboarding and wiring his junk up to a car battery when a Green Lantern Ring crashes through the ceiling and selects Simon for the Corps becuase he meets the Criteria of being fearless and honest.

Up, up and a fucking way.

To say that the US government shat a brick that a (presumed) Mulism extremist terrorist has a Green Lantern Ring is some what of an understatement.

Shit got real.

Re: Ryan Reynolds Not Interested in Returning as Green Lantern Right N

Hal Jordan or bust.

There's a good film in that first GL movie but it's bogged down in pointless chuffer (the family birthday scene, Pie Face at Hal's appartment ("I know, right?!"), Pie Face and Carol at Hal's appartment after his fight with Hector).

You could edit pretty much all that out with some minor reworkings and have a more streamlined action packed movie.

I bet there's a terrific fan edit out there

Re: Ryan Reynolds Not Interested in Returning as Green Lantern Right N

They should hire JJ Abrams to reboot it as Red Lantern, because Green isn't cool any more with the young people.

Re: Ryan Reynolds Not Interested in Returning as Green Lantern Right N

J.J. Abrams would be the best thing that could happen to Green Lantern.

Re: Ryan Reynolds Not Interested in Returning as Green Lantern Right N

Because he isn't shit.

The bar has been soooooooooo lowered.

JJ does great work.

Green Lantern was a complete clusterfuck made by incompetent morons.

Because of movies like Green Lantern it's turned a fair producer like JJ into a fantastic producer.

Who made Green Lantern?

Martin Campbell?

Fuck.

The only other thing he's done of note is some shitty Bond films and Zorro.

Zorro are equally also the worst movie ever made.

A friend came over a month back, she's a little retarded, thinks there's this bearded prig in the clouds granting wishes, but I say that I have over 12 thousand movies, that I have everything which she could ever want... She says she wants Zorro. I frown and admit that after 6 years of entrenched piracy that I do not have the Zorro movies because they're shit. Sure, I felt like less of a man because I couldn't pleasure her when she was challenging me, but what she wanted me to do, admit that I had, or to actually "own" The Mask of Zorro as part of my collection is despicably perverse and churlishly unnatural.

IHAVESTANDARDS!

Re: Ryan Reynolds Not Interested in Returning as Green Lantern Right N

The Mask of Zorro is pretty good. The sequel is terrible though, presumably because it was written by Bob Orci & Alex Kurtzman.

Also, Martin Campbell directed two of the best Bond movies in Goldeneye and Casino Royale.

Re: Ryan Reynolds Not Interested in Returning as Green Lantern Right N

How dare you sir, The Mask of Zorro is fantastic. I'll take it over any of those knockoff Batman movies any day of the week. :p

Re: Ryan Reynolds Not Interested in Returning as Green Lantern Right N

Arrrrr, this be olde newse, and discussed here beeforrrre. ;)

And if one reads the full quote, he all but says he'd gladly return if Whedon or Nolan were in charge.

you know, I like those two as well, but I don't think they're the "comic book movie gods" they seem to be portrayed as now. There are plenty of competent writers who could do a good GL.

Love The Mask of Zorro ...I should watch it again soon. What Knock-off Batman movies do you mean?

Re: Ryan Reynolds Not Interested in Returning as Green Lantern Right N

^ All Bat-flicks are Zorro knockoffs by definition, mon ami. ;)

Heck, even in The Dark Knight Rises, the broken and imprisoned hero, passing-the-torch theme, and burning hero-symbol all had precedents in Mask... which was shorter, funnier, had sympathies that lay with the 99%, and was Matthew Modine-free. :p

I didn't realize that. Wonder what it was like to direct David Niven.

Re: Ryan Reynolds Not Interested in Returning as Green Lantern Right N

I also have no appreciation for Nolan's bat-trilogy.

Unlike The Dark Knight Rises, which called Wall Street a bunch of thieves. I'm told that's a common sentiment among the 1%.

I have mixed feelings about Nolan's bat-trilogy. I liked Begins and while I liked Ledger's Joker the last two movies suffer in trying to be too dark and serious. I know Batman is a dark character but the movies could have been a little more fun.

What, through one line from the murdering, psychotic antagonist? Next you'll be claiming that Milk is an anti-gay rights movie, because Anita Bryant.

(It was a pretty good line, though, I'll give Bane that. :p)

Re: Ryan Reynolds Not Interested in Returning as Green Lantern Right N

My only problem with the Nolan films is that it became less and less about the Bat and Ninja stuff. I expected Batman to win over Bane with skill, tactics and technology, for example, but in the end it was just brute force.
And while I liked the entire trilogy, Rises could have begun with Batman being full in business, kicking a lot of ass. Instead he was in retirement, and then it was no wonder that HE got his ass kicked by Bane. It would have been more interesting to do the Rocky III approach: he's full in business, the enemies are no match for him, so he lets himself go, he is overconfident, and THEN he gets his ass kicked.

I'm sorry Nolan did not personally step into the film and communicate the message in his own words to the audience. You know, like filmmakers usually do. ( And it's more than just Bane's line. ) It is also true that if an idea is not repeated ad nauseam in scene after scene, it can be treated as though it's not really present in the film at all. Unlike "Batman beats up criminals, so 1% rules", something which is apparently self-evident. I mean, it's not like you intend to justify your contention regarding the film's sympathies by referring to the antics of a murdering, psychotic antagonist.
